Default NY Sun: Marchman: How to fix the Mets

How To Fix Randolph's Squad - May 27, 2008 - The New York Sun

Interesting stuff, with the caveat exception:

Quote:
This may all be tinkering around the edges, in total disproportion to the gravity of the team's plight, but by not firing the manager, the Mets have made it clear that they're not going to do much else, and there's nothing and no one to trade for a cure-all anyway.
To sum up:
- Quit giving Johan long rest
- Get rid of Anderson, Chavez and Easley, replace them with AHern and Val Pascucci
- Pelfrey to the pen; Heilman to the rotation
- Sign Kenny Lofton (even though they should really sign Bonds)

And my favorite part:

Quote:
Once the hapless Mets' manager goes, as he inevitably will, attention will turn to the general manager who stocked the roster with aging, fragile, expensive players such as Orlando Hernandez and Luis Castillo and gave away cheap young players, such as Jeff Keppinger and Heath Bell, whom the team badly misses. Who tosses away a human shield while it's still capable of catching incoming bullets?
God, Omar's a dope.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the first-place New York Mets.

Well, tied for first place in the NL East with the Phillies at 52-44. But with a 10-game winning streak, and with the way the Mets rallied for a 10-8 win over the Reds last night, it seems like only a matter of time before the Mets leave the rest of the division in the rearview mirror.
You ****ing knew it after reading that.

Putting a bandaid on a severed limb. The 3 bench guys are all washed up dreck so that's a no brainer. Heilman in the rotation is about 3 years too late but do it anyway.

The McGimpy does most things upside down: eats, sleeps (an average of 23 hours per day), mates, and gives birth. Because of the McGimpy's upside down life, many of the McGimpy's internal organs (liver, stomach, spleen, pancreas) are in different positions from other mammals. McGimpy sometimes lets out a cry or hissing sound.

During the rare times the McGimpy goes down to the ground (such as to change trees for food), it moves very slowly.

So, because we have so many useless vets, we bring in Val Bagodonuts and A Hernandez? Then, we sign a washed up vet in Kenny Lofton?

Not sure I get the logic.

How is Lofton considered washed up after hitting .296, .367 OB%, with 23 SB's and 86 runs scored (490 Ab's) with Texas and Cleveland last year?

That's a pretty big upgrade over what this team currently has.

I'm not a fan of Heilman going to the rotation but I'd be OK with giving it a try if it means moving Pelfrey to the pen. His numbers show he's been better in the early part of the game and while he hasn't been great early on his numbers seem to really go up the 2nd and on the rare occasion the 3rd time through the line-up.

Relieving seems to fit his 1 pitch arsenal better and might also give him a reason to just go in and let is all hang out knowing he only has to go an inning or 2 at a time.

I agree, and don't get why he doesn't have a job, but there has to be a reason that he doesn't have a job right?

The best solution is to bring up the AAA team and give them a shot. Can they do any worse? At least they would WANT to play hard, and they aren't miserable sh!tstains.....yet.

i dont get why lofton hasn't been considered. he must have been called, and he must still be demanding 5+ mil. Its kind of like those empty stores you see on 5th ave. the landlords would rather they sit empty, than lower their prices a little to affordable rates.

I'd offer lofton 1-2 mil, to get in here for the rest of the year. he plays left when alou is down, and when alou is back, he can spell him or rotate around for days off, and he'd be a much better pinch hitter than endy or marlon. he probably runs better still too.

Bonds? no. lofton can at least play all 3 OF positions if needed.

Earlier in the year when he almost signed with the Rays it was about money. The Rays offered around 1-2 mil and he wanted closer to 6.

The Red's were also interested this off season but weren't offering a ML contract at the time and went with Patterson instead.

I think these are all pretty sound ideas. But they're ideas for someone with a little bit of moxy...of which Omar really has none.

I'd gut the whole team, but hey, that's me. I'm a little loco.

I like some of the moves he suggests, we need some hungry guys in here, and I dont mean Mo Vaughn hungry. I think Preston Wilson and Reggie Sanders are also sitting home and are lightyears better then Anderson, Easley, and Chavez.

They must be around cause they bring good clubhouse chemistry

OK, maybe not washed up but it sort of goes against the overall philosphy of what the writer is suggesting. Lofton is old. So too are Marlon Anderson and Alou. Like Lofton, both had very good years last year. Heck, even Castillo had a decent year last year.

I just don't see the point of adding another old player.

If it's only for 1 year I have no problem with it or any other veterans/players brought in to try and get this team going.

It's a sad day though when people are calling for Preston Wilson to be an option after a dreadful 2007 season and knee surgery.

Per Sanders, this off season it was reported that he was only interested in west coast teams if he decided to play.

Lofton is another clubhouse lawyer/cancer that this team doesn't need.

That said, I'd probably take him if he kept his mouth shut. I also have to say that it is time to say bye bye to Chavy and Easley.

Easley has lost a step since that horrible leg injury, and Chavy...c'mon how long are the Mets going to let him milk that catch from the 2006 NLCS? Enough. The bench, once an asset for the Mets, really stinks now. I agree that the Mets are not going to do what they "should" do (dumping Delgado, for example), and they will let ME into the rotation before Heilman, but I think they can stand to make some changes in some spots (bench).

Pascucci is tearing up AAA, but from what I've read, is a horrible OF, which might explain why Evans got the call and he didn't.
