Default Reyes: Start fielding offers

In my opinion, it's time to start calling around to other GM's to gauge what kind of package of young talent Reyes could net. This is, of course, in spite of all conventional wisdom that says you keep players of his age, talent level and salary to build around them. I say this because in my view, he is the classic case of a million dollar talent with a ten cent head. Despite his young age, you have to say he's been in league long enough to show the kind of baseball smarts that a main cog in your "core" group of players needs to have in order to be successful. Getting picked off last night was just another example of how he continues to show no progression in his development.
The Mets are at a crossroads. They should certainly start looking at dumping a lot of their veterans such as Alou, Wagner, Heilman, etc. that teams are likely to want come the deadline. However, I don't see any of these guys returning the types of packages that will net future building blocks. Reyes, for now, still has a lot of appeal to other teams. I think it's worth exploring the options, because frankly I see him as a detriment to the team's overall progression.

And what would be a reasonable package?

Ugh. Get Willie away from Reyes and he'll excel.

I honestly think that if you get a fresh clubhouse culture, which includes scrapping Randolph and various players you'd see the Reyes of old. Someone who will hold him AND veterans to high standards.

I cannot agree that the Mets should sell low on Reyes. He's frustrating as all hell, but he's accomplished an awful lot for someone not yet 25 and his tools are still there.

I absolutely wouldnt trade Reyes. He's only 25, and is surrounded by Cancer right now. Get rid of the Cancer, and he will do much better. Even if you were a GM, and you did try to move him now, I think his value would be on the low end of the past 2-3 years. It makes no sense to me.

As much as Reyes drives me crazy, and can be incredibly stupid at times, a lot of his stupidity would be avoided if he had baseball mentors with brains around him, who could teach him, and learn from his mistakes. Clearly, this is not the case with your 2008 Mets.

Didn't Reyes become a totally different player (and the Mets offense as a direct result) after Willie scolded him?

You can't trade Reyes when his value is at its lowest.

If you could trade Reyes straight up for another SS (realistically) who would you go for?

if Reyes's career is gonna go into a tailspin simply because Willie scolded him for not hustling, then don't you think a case could be made for Reyes actually being the cancer?

No. Reyes is still young. He doesn't seem to be very smart, and/or learning bad things from primadonnas. He needs people around him that will work with him, and teach him good solid fundamentals. It is pretty clear that solid fundamental baseball doesnt seem to be of any concern to Willie, the coaches, and most of the players. What little support Reyes is getting, is from all the wrong people. He needs mentors, not idiots telling him "the champagne will be sweeter", or "about what ?".

Yeah, but then Willie flew to the DR to schmooze and coddle him over the Winter, so I'm not sure Reyes even knows who Willie really is. He's not been consistent at all the way he's handled him over the years, depending on which day of the week it is...
