Default Did Gary Carter really say this?

MetsBlog.com » Quote: Gary Carter is Available

Quote:
“Boy, I’ll tell you what, I would love that, guys. When I saw that on ESPN today, Mike & Mike, they were talking about it and immediately I got on the phone and I called Jay Horowitz and I asked, ‘Should I try to call Mr. Wilpon?’ If there is this going on I just want them to know of my availability. I’m only a phone call away because my contract allows me to leave the ball club. I could be in New York tomorrow, if necessary, because if there’s anything at the major league level I can leave this job…The comments that David Wright made saying that, you know, there’s no spark, there’s no fire, if anything I would love to bring that to the table because you know me, guys. I love the game, have a great passion for it and you know my enthusiasm, and hopefully I would be able to bring that to maybe help turn that ball club around. There’s way too much talent there for them to be a game under .500 and to lose four in a row to the Braves. That’s just kind of uncalled for and I think that they’ve just become complacent in some ways and ever since their demise of last year. And if you look at Willie’s record it is right around .500 since June of last year. And when you have that much talent there are a lot more expectations than where they’re at right now.”
Wow, he managed to campaign for somebody else's job and sound desperate, all at the same time? I like the Kid, but he comes off super-slimy here.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the first-place New York Mets.

Well, tied for first place in the NL East with the Phillies at 52-44. But with a 10-game winning streak, and with the way the Mets rallied for a 10-8 win over the Reds last night, it seems like only a matter of time before the Mets leave the rest of the division in the rearview mirror.
You ****ing knew it after reading that.

My god. I'm sorry but that's hilarious.

You could do worse, but he's got an ego the size of NY. That would always be worrisome. I'm sure he can execute a double-switch though, which makes him one up on Willie...

I'm with you there. He'd make it an even bigger circus than it is now.

One would think that Gary just knocked himself off of the Randolph Family Christmas Card list.

"Dear Mr. Wilpon. Please let me manage the Mets. I can supply my own uniform, if it makes a difference."

To add a little more from the ESPN.com article,
ESPN - Mets GM, ownership supporting Randolph despite slow start to season - MLB

"I politely tried to tell him in a nice way that this isn't the time or place to do that," Horwitz said. "Gary's an old friend. I just listened to what he said, and I said, 'Gary, it's not the time or place to make those kind of inquiries.' "

It seems that he may have cost himself the job if/when it becomes available by stepping out of line by actually getting in touch with the Mets.

He'd make Bobby V look conservative in comparison though.
