Great, he can beat up Castros victims if they threaten him with the police.

Perfect.

I'd just like the Mets to avoid some sort of embarrassment. It's hard enough being a fan NOW, never mind after the "Wally Backman bar watch" starts on Page 6.

The sensible thing is let Oberkfell get his shot... interim basis. Let's see how he does...

I am done with Willie... and Omar, but realistically, he isn't going anywhere.

Dave, who do you mean "he isn't going anywhere"? Willie or Omar?

Here's some good stuff on Oberkfell. He has every bit the resume that Wally has, and he's done most all of it in house, and with no jail time to boot...

Time To Overhaul This Coaching Staff

Quote:
After parting ways with the Phillies, the Mets picked him up and brought him in to coach their then Class-A affiliate, the Capital City Bombers. After one season with them, Oberkfell took over Class A St. Lucie, leading the team to the playoffs in 2002 and winning the Florida State League title in 2003.

In 2004, he moved up to coach Double-A Binghamton, and finished 10 games over .500, making the postseason.

He moved up again last year, this time to Double-A Binghamton, where the B-Mets finished 10 games over .500 and made the postseason. Counting this year’s appearance, Oberkfell has four consecutive playoff berths at three different levels.

He has managed the club’s AAA affiliate for the past three seasons and is currently in his fourth season managing the team. In his rookie season (2005) as a manager in the Triple-A level, he was named the Minor League Manager of the Year by Baseball America, winning the International League’s south division with a 79-65 record by 14 games.

That's why I like much more as a permanent solution rather than an interim thing. A lot of his value to me lies in his intimate familiarity with the Mets' farm system what all these guys can and can't do. Seems to me he'd be great at putting together the roster in the spring, integrating those kids with the big league bullpen, bench and tail end of the rotation if necessary.

You don't really get a chance to help remake the team when you're the interim lets-see-how-you-do guy.

Agreed on Oberkfell. He should be the guy, but they need clean house with players too. I don't see how this will change what is going on already (the divided clubhouse, etc...), hence the "interim" label. IMHO, the Mets need to do something even bolder than fire the mgr, something to serve notice to the players that the BS will no longer be tolerated. Too bad $$$ gets in the way of these things, because Delgado should be the first player kicked out of here.

If Omar could bring Willie in to manage a NY, Win-Now team with his impressive resume of 3rd base coaching, they can certainly bring in Oberkfell with his resume.

As I said a few weeks ago, this needs to be a Corleone baptism.

Willie, Peterson, Delgado, Heilman, Castillo (yeah, right), Perez...Reyes (if possible), look into moving Beltran...

Keep Maine, Church and Wright (for now)...and of course, you have to keep Santana. The rest can go, if they can be moved. Re-stock with young, give-a-sh*t players, if possible.

Then, whack Omar.

My guess is that Omar isn't going to get the chance to choose the next mgr... that will be the Wilpon message to him that his ass is on the griddle as well...

Problem is, based on what we know, we already have an Honor System "These guys know what they have to do" manager. Oberkfell may be qualified but is he what is needed in this particular situation?

I think he should get the first shot (realistically speaking. . .Backman is committed to another team this year even if it is an independant league and Oberkfell is already employed by the organization) so we should see if he can make a difference with arguably the same style.

Myers is a wife beater and is a hero in Philadelphia. Then again, that is Philadelphia....
