Default As If We Didn't Feel Crappy Enough...

ESPN - Buckner throws out first pitch as Red Sox hand out bling - MLB

Why would that make me feel crappy as a Mets fan?

Good for him.

It doesn't make me feel crappy at all. It's about time he was recognized for the player that he was.

One or two of his type would do wonders for the dead from the neck up team we root for.

My point is -- Geeze, even Buckner gets forgiven? Did 1986 even happen?

He was forgiven at Fenway in 1990. The streets of Boston are another story.

The Mets did a huge celebration of that team a few years ago, and former players from that club are all over the organization.

Im not getting your point here.

I don't see the issue here. Buckner got far more of the blame than he deserved in the first place. Stanley owned a bigger piece of it, but skated.

I still say Gedman deserved more blame and got none of it. That should have been scored a passed ball, and not a wild pitch.

Agreed, completely. In 2000 when the Mets were up in Boston I had great seats and a Sox fan was ready to fight me for saying exactly that.

Schiraldi too, a lot of those Red Sox fans seem to forget about him as well. By the time the Buckner play happened there was A) no way the Mets were losing that game and B) no way he was beating Mookie to the bag (which was the reason for the screw up in the first place)

Agreed - there was no way either Buckner or Stanley were going to beat Mookie to the bag.

One of the greatest things I saw were before and after shots taken in a Boston Bar shown in that week's SI - one shot taken after the top of the tenth with the obvious glee on their obnoxious faces, and one taken right after the ball went through Buckner's legs

Jon is right. Gedman deserves blame. Passed ball. Clemens deserves blame for asking out of the game and then changing the story about it eight times. Schiraldi deserves blame for melting in the spotlight like a surprised deer. And gimpy Buckner should not have even been on the field, thanks to managerial supergenious McNamara.

That said, what a great, great f*cking confluence of events. My god.

I've always believed that Schiraldi should have taken the most heat. Buckner was just the convenient sacrificial lamb.

It was actually heartwarming to see Buckner throw out the first pitch. It's amazing what 2 rings can do to repair fan's bad memories.

OMG - I love the SI Vault. I just found the pictures I mentioned - on pages 38 and 39 of the November 3, 1986 issue.
