Why isn't the home opener today?

I thought it was customary for opening day in these bad weather climates to make opening day on Monday with the built in day off on Tuesday in case it rains. I haven't looked at the weather report but since it is supposed to be pretty dry here in Philly the next few days I presume the same is in store for NY but why take the chance. I would be extremely pissed off if I held a ticket for the final opening day at Shea which got rained out and now I held a ticket for a run of the mill Tuesday in August.

I noticed that the Mets have a good # off days in September. Maybe MLB is trying to spread the off days across the year, so you don't have a case where a team has to play every day for 3+ weeks down the stretch.

Hey, if the Mets don't open on Tuesday, how else is Sillie Willie going to find a way to work Nelson Figueroa and Mike Pelfrey into the starting rotation in week 1 versus a serious division rival?

Well the Phils are playing today, so its not that easy as just pushing the game back. They probably couldn't work it so that every team has a day off after the home opener.
