Default Willie still doesn't know how to use a bullpen.

Last year, a huge part of the collapse was a crappy, worn out bullpen.

This year, on Opening Day, he uses 3 guys to get through one inning.

Because of the rainout, the Mets are skipping Pelfrey. Why not use him in relief today (especially after Sosa gave up the GS)?

Ugh.

Pelfrey is not the answer to any of the Mets woes.

This does not detract from the fact that Willie doesn't know how to manage a bullpen.

the funny thing is with managers and bullpens is when the members of the bullpen do not such fat ass, ie 2006, the manager is a genious, when the bullpen blows ass the manager is Elmer Fudd.

Where was Felicano to face Kelly Johnson?

So what would have been the proper action?:
- Leave Wise in after he gave up hits to two of his first three hitters?
- bring in Smith or Sosa to face a lefty power threat w/runners on?
- or leave Schoeneweis in to face a righty with 2-on?

Bottom line is that I already have zero confidence in the bullpen and we're not even a week into the season. This could be a looooooong year.

No, but I'm suggesting Pelfrey get some work in on the day he was supposed to pitch. It's my understanding that he's being skipped in the rotation.

I like Heilman coming in after Wise blows up.

I agree, he didn't have much of a choice in using 3 guys, but you didn't need to do that. The guy's complaining about the pen use in Game 1 of the season like it's Game 150 of the season.

Willie wanted to see what he got in Sosa and Character instead of just going to Feelings ASAP. He eventually used Feelings the next inning. C'mon now.

Yeah that would work fine.
Plus there's no chance we'd crawl all over Willie's butt for not using a LHP to pitch to Jacobs with men on and his L/R history ... or that he was burning Heilman when the pitcher's spot was leading off the next inning so you'd need someone else to pitch the 9th.
Of course he could have double-switched, but then we'd bash him for doing it simply to prove he could not to mention for over-using a top guy in a 3-run game on opening day with the entire pen fresh.

Bottom line is that getting upset simply on account of the number of relievers used in a inning is a waste of time, especially when the switching worked exactly the way it was supposed to.
