Default Pelfrey: Delusional

Quote:
Pelfrey doesn’t blame his weight for last season’s troubles — he says he got to 257 pounds at one point last summer and will arrive in Port St. Lucie around 230 — but also knows that better shape physically translates into a better mental approach.

“I’m going to come out and have a good year, not only for myself but for the team,” Pelfrey said. “We need to come back and start off good and get the ball rolling.”

Pelfrey said he is not disappointed with the team’s offseason, despite cries he heard for the Mets to upgrade their rotation. If the season started today, the rotation would likely be Santana, Pelfrey, John Maine, Oliver Perez and Fernando Nieve.

“I understand that people look at the rotation and they have question marks. There should be,” Pelfrey said.

“Guys got hurt. I had a bad year, but guys are healthy now and I’m going to bounce back and have a good year. It’s amazing to me how big of a question there is about the rotation [by fans]. I hear about it and I just laugh.”

Pelfrey said he believes Jason Bay will replace Carlos Delgado’s bat in the lineup, giving the Mets plenty of power. He also said re-signing Alex Cora was important because of the leadership the veteran utilityman brings to the clubhouse.

Pelfrey also praised the Mets’ decision to sign Kelvim Escobar. The right-hander won 18 games for the Angels in 2007, but is expected to compete for the eighth-inning setup role.

“When he first got signed, I thought maybe they were going to give him a chance and throw him in the rotation,” Pelfrey said. “I thought maybe he could be a dark horse. Slot him in there and he could be a big-time difference maker. I don’t think that is how it’s going to be, but that idea excited me at first.”

Most projections have the Mets finishing third or fourth in the NL East, but Pelfrey said the Mets, as assembled, are ready to compete for the playoffs.

“Honestly, I didn’t think there needed to be a complete overhaul with this team,” he said. “It’s pretty much the same team that we ran out there last year that everybody predicted was going to win the World Series.

I didn't know Pelfrey was from Medford.

Pelfrey is reading from Omar's script poor bastard.

Sounds very, very scripted... Where are the "you knows"?

Seriously, Pelf's not going to throw the starting rotation under the bus.

Anyone else bothered that he was not in shape last season?

There are a LOT of people delusional about the Mets right now. Metsblog has become almost unreadable. Every time I read some Mets fan writing that he's excited for pitchers and catchers, I have to shake my head. I haven't been this non-excited for a season since the early 90s.

The best thing that could happen to the Mets this year is either a miracle World Series championship, or the Wilpons cleaning house, hiring competent baseball people to run the team and then backing away. The sad thing is, both seem equally unlikely. I have very little (if any) hope for the long term future, because the Mets' problems are systemic and institutional, from the top on down. Given the family that owns the team, failure is literally in this organization's DNA.

It's pretty much what you would expect a player to say. The Mets Spin Doctors are in full force. We all know it's BS.

The delusion is so bad that I actually bet someone 100 bucks on the Mets not finishing at .500 because he was ripping my lack of enthusiasm in the roster as currently constructed.

Was this thread really needed ? Did you guys expect Pelfrey to come out and say the team sucks and the rotation sucks. We all know this organization is a joke from top to bottom but sometimes you guys complain just for the sake of complaining.

I know it's getting real boring around here. It was so much more entertaining when everyone loved the team and I could rag on them. Bashing this team is just plain boring now.

Meh, he's a young pitcher who wants to have a good year and not make matters worse for himself by speaking the truth.

Oh and others have pointed out, it seems VERY scripted. Especially being almost verbatim for what Minaya keeps saying about the team being the same as what was predicted for a WS title. The fact that Minaya thinks EVERYONE apart from a few idiots thought that is laughable.

This year, Pelfrey may be the best pitcher in the rotation not named Santana. Think about that and you'll gladly take his 9 wins.

I don't think anyone can disagree but it is what it is.
