Default The NEW New York Metropolitans GM!!!

The irony would be stewed to PERFECTION....

Alou enjoying role as Escogido GM | MLB.com: News

By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com

02/06/10 7:27 PM EST

MARGARITA ISLAND, Venezuela -- Former Major League All-Star Moises Alou says one of the most difficult parts of being general manager for the Dominican Republic's Leones del Escogido is sitting still during the games.

After almost 24 years in the game, he has the baseball side covered.

"It's crazy because I didn't know that being in the stands would be such a big adjustment," Alou, 43, said. "Sometimes you are sitting there watching a game and there's a lefty on the mound throwing weak stuff, and you want to get a bat in your hands. Sometimes, you see a guy just throwing fastballs down the middle against your team, and you just want to yell, 'Swing the bat!'"

The first-year general manager says he's come to grips with the fact that he can't control what happens on the field. He does believe he can control how his players approach the game.

"I wanted them to play the game the way I played the game, hard and responsible," he said. "In Winter League, guys show up one day and the other day, they don't. I don't put up with that stuff. I put up rules and they've followed them. You add a little discipline and it makes a difference."

The Alou approach has worked. During the regular season, the Leones finished the 2010 campaign with a record of 30-19 and topped the Gigantes del Cibao in the league finals in nine games. After a 7-2 win over Mexico on Saturday afternoon, Escogido leads the pack after five Caribbean Series games with a 4-1 record and is in the driver's seat heading into the final day of play Sunday.

Could he be worse???

So, he's preaching what he necessarily didn't practice during his time with the Mets?

F*ck him.

I don't know about that... granted he was brittle as hell, but I always had the feeling that his injuries upset him more than they upset the fans.

He never gave the impression that he was jaking it.

Didn't say he really did (but then again, this is the Mets, so nothing surprises), but he is yet another symbol of Omar and his failed cronyism....

agreed.

He was yet another guy that they acquired/signed 3-5 years too late, but he always impressed as a guy who played hard as long as he was healthy, which, granted, never seemed to be often enough...

On the OTHER hand -- don't the recent revelations regarding Putz and Beltran and even Reyes kind of make you wonder about ANY diagnosis and treatment of past injuries?

Kind of? This has Jeff Wilpon written all over it. I can't sit here and believe for one second that New York Hospital for Special Surgery (which has nothing but rave reviews from other pro sports teams, as well as personal friends and acquaintances who are/were under their care)..... is incompetent, or even has been slightest derelict in what they are supposed to do.

Jeffy and Omar? A whole other ballgame, IMO.

I think Moises already qualifies for Medicare.

It doesn't matter if Charlie Brown is GM, Wilpon is still owner.

Why would Alou wanna be the GM of this ****pile of a franchise?

Does he need to pee on his hands to be a good GM?

I'm with Frank here. Alou, to me, was a lot like Cliff Floyd. He may not have been the most productive player on the team, but he never asked out of a game. He was always willing to put his body on the line to help out however he could. He may have been an Omar disciple, but you cannot blame him for that. Alou is good people, where I'm concerned and I feel he would make a very good coach on any team. GM? Doubtful. He has the makings of a very solid hitting coach. Someone who would preach discipline and.... gasp.... actually follow up on it.

I agree on the coach/mentor/etc. part, but he'd probably hurt himself instructing a bunch of rooks. LOL.
