I have to agree with what Roker and Seaver said here BRD. I we get told that that's how it was from people reflecting on "the good old days" which in reality weren't so good.

Plus the fact that the Dodgers WERE the 1950s version of the 1990s Braves lends credence to the idea that the fanbase were all happy go-lucky "ah just wait 'till next year" pom-pom wavers. Because they KNEW that their team would be one of the top teams in the league again "next year."

I'd like to think that if there was a DoFo (ummm, not as great sounding as MoFo) back in that day, there would be just as many vitriolic posts about decision making and players not getting the job done as there are around here. Lord knows if Charlie Dressen would have survived 1951 if there was an internet back then!

And Dodgers fans were hardly "oh shucks we'll get them next season" They were like we were in 99-2000 with Braves "wtf do we gotta do to beat these guys". From 1939 to their last season in Brooklyn the Dodgers had one season under .500, 7 pennants, and a World Series crown. We would kill for that type of success.
I totally respect what you Rogers, and Seaver said here, and trust me... wasn't trying to rag on dem Bums, for the record. I just feel there are similarities, especially in the "lovable losers" stuff... though there is almost NOTHING to love about this Mets team...

I too, would kill for the Mets to have the kind of success dem Bums had, even if they fell short just ab0ut every time. Those Yankees were really great teams.

Maybe our relationship with the Mets players would be better if they hadn't blamed us (the fans) for their shortcomings.

I think many Mets fans (ones that I know), are tired of being asked to drink the "believing" kool-aid. I want to see things DONE.

As my Yankees fan friend likes to remind me, "While you Mets fans continue to believe, we Yankees fans... we already KNOW" -- and he's right.
Im sorry, thats crap. Come on Dave...basic baseball knowledge here...Branch Rickey was a hard core competitor. He was not an "aww shucks" guy at all.

Actually, quite a few live or lived right in Queens. Sure, in the better neighborhoods, but still...they walk the streets like everybody else.

But about the Mets, you're spot-on. I'm tired of having to hear how many improvements the team is going to make only to see essentially the same stuff dredged out onto the field for the past three (going on four) years. It isn't like things are looking up, either. And that's the thing that gets me the most frustrated.

Somebody say something encouraging.
We had a glimpse of hope in 2006/2007, but the carpet was immediately pulled out from under us and the team went right back to being crap.

Rickey was so competitive that he went out and got Robinson, Newcombe and Campanella - basically spitting in the face of a hundred years of Baseball's institutionalized segregation "gentlemen's agreement".

If you think that he did that out of altruism, you're insane.

He took that kind of HUGE risk to WIN GAMES.

It'd be like the Wilpon's having the balls to steal Kim Ng from the Dodgers because she's a genious, despite having already botched his affirmative action quotas with Manuel and Minaya.

Bingo. Rickey wasnt some affirmative action community organizer hoping for social change. He saw Robinson and Gibson and Paige and know those guys could come to the bigs and kick MAJOR ass. He wanted to win....period. He just ran into a buzz saw in the Yanks. But those Dodger teams were pretty stacked.

And it isn't going to get better. Get ready to become the Baltimore Orioles, with David Wright doing his pale imitation of the way Cal Ripken wasted the end of his career there. Get ready for at least a decade of being a high-priced loser.

Until something changes that somehow makes the Mets not incomprehensibly incompetent, anyone who gives the Wilpons a ****ing dime is a ****ing rube.
