Default All Star Game IGT 7/14/09 AL v NL

Suzuki
Jeter
Mauer
Teixeira
Bay
Hamilton
Young
Hill
Halladay

Ramirez
Utley
Pujols
Braun
Ibanez
Wright
Victorino
Molina
Lincecum

Prediction: Not sure why any Mets fan would watch this game since they don't have a prayer of making the playoffs, let alone the World Series, but, Johan will come in to pitch the 3rd, give up 7 runs. The NL will come back to grab a lead in the 9th, only to allow K-Rod to blow it. Meanwhile, Wright will become the first player in the All Star Game history to strikeout 5 times. Why so pessimistic? They can't possibly do any worse and if I'm wrong, it's a pleasant surprise.

All kidding aside, if Manuel (Charlie, that is) puts Hoffman in the 9th for the save again, he should be banned from managing in any capacity again for life, including Little League.

Side bet time. The game goes on the air at 8 pm ET. So I'm setting the over/under for actual time of first pitch at 8:45. I'm taking over.

There wasn't much reason to watch it when the Mets were running all over the NL either. This one counts? Blah, blah, blah...

Let's take a couple of weeks off and play the WBC now, or at least part of it. You know, REALLY give the fans something to watch. You could even give home field in the Caribbean World Series to the team that comes in first between the DR, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. What a gimmick that would be!

I foresee 2 wright home runs, followed by an 0 for 18 start to the second half from our All-Star MVP

Why isn't it Musial or Gibson throwing out the first pitch?

It is, you're right, but I was just wondering out loud why it wasn't Musial or Gibson...

I mean, in San Francisco they had Mays and in Boston they had Williams in the middle of their respective ceremonies. Musial is not in the greatest of health (but neither were either of those two guys) and you'd think they'd want to do something epic for the greatest Cardinal ever and one of the greatest ball players ever.

LMAO.

There was an article in the past week's Mpls Star-Trib, a huge fluff piece, on Joe Mauer, running the whole "hometown hero" angle, etc. In the middle was stashed a couple of paragraphs about Twins management already fearing that after his contract is up in 2010 that they'll have trouble resigning him, because he has two goals: 1) hit .400 and 2) win a World Series.

My first immediate thought: "Man, it would be great to see the Mets sign a catcher of that caliber again."

My second immeditate thought: "Oh, wait, he wants to go to a winning team."

Because jumping on the Obama-mania bandwagon trumps giving one of the true icons of the game one more chance to bask in the spotlight apparently.

Interestingly enough, Obama is the first President since George Sr. back in 1992, in San Diego to throw out the first pitch:

Obama To Toss First Pitch At 2009 MLB All-Star Game*|*baseballdeworld.com

1937 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt
1962 - President John F. Kennedy threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch
1970 - President Richard Nixon threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch
1976 - President Gerald Ford threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch
1978 - Former President Gerald Ford threw out the Ceremonial First Pitch
1989 - Former President Ronald Reagan
Regan even joined the broadcast team for an inning during the game!
1991 - President George H.W. Bush with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney
1992 - President George H.W. Bush with President Carlos Salinas de Gortari of Mexico

It looks like its the "All Stars Among Us" is the reason the POTUS is there, rather than Obama, so maybe its not Obama-mania.

Or it could be a thinly veiled one to get the Presidents to the All Star Game!

They had George Bush Sr. say "these points of light."

I don't mind the reference, but still, that's a bit of a groaner.
