Default Mets Sign...

The Mets signed Juan Urbina, a Venezuelan lefty, to a bonus worth more than $1MM, according to Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus. Urbina is the son of longtime major leaguer Ugueth Urbina.

Shocker...

How is this a shocker? It is the international free agent signing period and by all accounts Ugueth's son is a pretty decent prospect as long as he doesn't try to torch someone. You didn't expect them to sign some crappy European, did you?

I think people are just tired of Omar trying to revive the Montreal Expos, even if it is the son of a former player/jailbird.

That's a little silly. Granted I know nothing about this kid, but given the rending of garments over the Mets' minor league system, it's hard to find legitimate issue with the acquisition of young talent.

Oh don't get me wrong. I hope the kid is good... I'm just pointing out the common thread in some Omar's dealings. Kind of like Six Degrees of Separation - Montreal Expos style.

I heard good things about Urbina. We won't hear from him for another 3-4 years, but hopefully he'll join the ranks of Mejia and Flores as jewels in the farm system.

These are the Top Prospects...

Miguel Angel Sano
Wagner Mateo - set to sign with the Cardinals for $3.1MM
Gary Sanchez
Guillermo Pimentel
Jose Vinicio - set to sign with the Red Sox for $2MM

Sano may sign with PIT or MIN...

Sanchez, a C, already signed today with the Yankees ($3M bonus)...

Urbina comes in at #8 on the list from Baseball America.

What about that Cuban lefty that throws 100 MPH that just defected. Or is his pricetag too high for Coupon.

Saw he defected... Would be a nice sign but I'm sure the price tag will be too high... He'll be a Yankee.

Hearing reports that he is looking for between 30 and 60 million. Kid is damn good, but not sure he's worth that much. Consider Contreras got 4 years 32 mil a few years back and he was one of the most refined Cuban pitchers to reach the majors.
