A baseball? I read years and years ago that they didn't want umps calling a close play to confuse it with the actual ball.

Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the first-place New York Mets.

Well, tied for first place in the NL East with the Phillies at 52-44. But with a 10-game winning streak, and with the way the Mets rallied for a 10-8 win over the Reds last night, it seems like only a matter of time before the Mets leave the rest of the division in the rearview mirror.
You ****ing knew it after reading that.

The answer, and this is per the radio show I was listening to on the drive in, is a baseball. Many logos incorporate the baseball into them, including the Mets. Maybe they were referring about the front of the uni's.

That's the answer. I am curious to whether this is now an expired rule by MLB. Hell, the Mets have a baseball on their shoulder patch logo.

I would think it's OK as long as it's not a plain white ball with red stitches. An ump sees a flash of that during a bang-bang play and it might alter the call. Who knows?
