Default Nichols to play in Europe?

Demetris Nichols-F- Knicks Jul. 12 - 10:26 am et

Demetris Nichols, taken by Portland with the 53rd pick in the draft and then traded to the Knicks, is likely to spend the upcoming season in Europe.
Because Nichols was a second-round pick, the Knicks do not have to sign him to a guaranteed contract and would still retain his rights. Isiah Thomas is still trying to make some moves to cut the roster from 17 to the maximum 15 to allow Nichols to play for the Knicks this season. "Obviously you can only have 15 during the season," senior VP Glen Grunwald told The Post. "We'll find a way to either keep him on the team or retain him as an asset for the future," he said.

This is ridiculous. Nichols is already showing he can be in the rotation THIS season.

Typical Knicks and their roster problems.

I agree....this kid can play. Good shooter, big, can handle the ball. Find a way to get him on this team.

That was the BIG question behind it - Could the Knicks fit him on the team? More and more the answer's no

Right because of all that greatness in front of him.

Can't they just take Jefferies out back and shoot him? Do that, and presto! open roster spot for Nichols....

Even if they get rid of Jefferies they are still one over the limit...

I still think Isaiah will deal Nate Robinson and one of the ugly contracts before the season starts. He speaks glowingly about Nichols so I doubt he wants to let him rot in Europe when he could contribute in NY. Possible deal for a guy who can be cut and a pick in next years draft.

You want to get rid of Nate for Nichols? I mean, I don't care since I root for the Nets, but you gotta have someone once All Alone decides to leave

I wish that was yesterday...

I'd rather have Collins (an unselfish, traditional PG) starting and Nate as back up....

The Knicks have enough scoring options without a score-first mentality PG. Once "I Am Legend" leaves there will be other options better suited to the Knicks offensive scheme. While Starbury can carry a team when he's hot, it is usually at the expense of the other offensive players on his team. THen when he's not hot, they entire team suffers.

So, yes, I would rather have Nichols over Robinson ANY day. I enjoy Robinson's energy and think he's got a ton of potential, but with Marbury here already there's no need for another shoot first point guard. Nichols, on the other hand, showed throughout his collegiate career that he has the ability to shoot from the outside, drive down the lane or pass it off to an open teammate. He is just what this team needs, an unselfish play-maker who is a threat from more than one place on the floor.

I was watching a game the other day and Clyde said that he thinks Nichols will have a hard time making the Knicks roster because they already have a bunch of good shooters? I'm not sure which team Clyde's been watching the last few years. It's a position the Knicks desparately need in my opinion and this guy looks good. But why did he drop so far in the draft?

Isiah will probably either try to trade or buyout Fred Jones and Dan Dickau's contracts to make room. I think we're stuck with James and Jeffries.

Nichols would get very limited PT anyway, let him go to Europe and continue to develop his game.

Agreed, and that's too bad because Jones and Dickau actually bring more to the table than those other two clowns do...
