Another possible replacement for N8..

SOURCE: KNICKS NUTS FOR ALMOND - New York Post

In another sign of Nate Robinson's looming exit, the Knicks signed Morris Almond, Utah's 2007 first-round pick out of Rice, to their summer-league team. According to a team source, the Knicks fully expect to sign the free agent sharpshooter for next season as long as he performs decently in Las Vegas. The summer league begins July 14.

"We're looking for shooting," Walsh told The Post. "We acquired some of it in the draft (Jordan Hill, Toney Douglas), but he's someone you have to look at."

Robinson is receiving interest from the Lakers, Magic and Sacramento, and his return to the Knicks is unlikely as the Knicks look for a cheaper bench option in Almond.

Anybody know about this guy?

As far as Lee goes:

With Memphis and Detroit out of the picture after Wednesday moves, under-the-cap Toronto emerges as a frontrunner in the David Lee Sweepstakes, possibly in a sign-and-trade. Nevertheless, the Knicks do not believe Raptors GM Bryant Colangelo will give up Chris Bosh. Toronto still feels it can re-sign Bosh. The Knicks believe the Lee saga will drag out for a while, as agent Mark Bartlestein looks to widen the field. Walsh said, "Our focus is still trying to sign him."

Nevertheless, if Bartlestein finds a taker willing to go more than $9 million per, the Knicks will be amenable to a sign-and-trade to try to get something out of it, even a draft pick.

There goes another LEE potetial landing spot by the board..

NBA free agents: Hedo Turkoglu, Portland Trail Blazers have agreement in principle - ESPN

Hedo Turkoglu has reached an agreement in principle to join the Portland Trail Blazers, according to sources.

Although a verbal commitment may be announced sooner, the terms of the contract cannot be finalized until Wednesday when the NBA informs teams what the 2009-10 salary cap will be.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only team left is the Thunder..and they are targetting Milsap..

Raptors are trying to RE-UP Marion...thats IT! as far as cap open teams go..

At this rate...Knicks can get Lee for MLE..

Ooopss.. guess not..looks like the real "Boss" changed things..

Source: Turkoglu changes mind on Blazers - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

Source: Turkoglu changes mind on Blazers

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports 2 hours, 10 minutes ago

Free agent Hedo Turkoglu(notes) has backed out of his commitment to the Portland Trail Blazers and plans to sign with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Friday night.

Turkoglu had agreed on a five-year, $50 million deal with the Blazers, but changed his mind and could be headed for a five-year, $56 million deal with the Raptors. Toronto would have to renounce three free agents – Shawn Marion(notes), Carlos Delfino(notes) and Anthony Parker(notes) – to create the cap space for Turkoglu.

Apparently, the Blazers are already busy exploring other free-agent options for the $9 million in salary-cap space.

A source says Turkoglu’s wife wanted badly to live in Toronto, a far more European-style city, and that’s where it appears the Turkish native is headed. The Raptors have embraced the Euro game under GM Bryan Colangelo, building a roster that includes Euro talents Jose Calderon(notes) and Andrea Bargnani(notes).

Five years ago, Turkoglu was close to signing with the Phoenix Suns that Colangelo was running, but changed his mind and went to the Orlando Magic.

After opting out of his contract last week in Orlando, he became one of the hottest free agents on the market. Turkoglu, 30, averaged 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds last season for the Magic.

So Toronto is out of the Lee sweepstakes now. Who's left? Portland and OKC? They're not paying more than the knicks just to have him be Aldridge's backup... so I doubt they're really in it to begin with. They'll probably go after Marion when toronto dumps him... so that leaves the Knicks and OKC. No way Lee doesn't choose to just sign a one year deal, and try again next year.

Portland still may go for him..OKC is going for Milsap....I wouldn't be too mad if Portland decides to overpay for Lee and Force a S&T...they have some good young talent there that could help Knicks..

I do wonder if at this point he either Takes Walsh's 7-8 mil or Waits to next offseason..which would be good for Kniccks..they can offer him MORE next offseason with out effecting cap..same with n8.

I dont understand why Portland is going for him. I don't recall reading any reports on it. If anything, I've read they've been looking for a SF. They're not going to kill their capspace just to get Lee as a backup. Lee is not starting over aldridge, or their two-headed center, Pryzboden, so I really don't see the fit.

Yea..its been mixed reports..they wanted Ariza and lost out on him too...I think they go elsewhere too..they also wanted a pg...and supposedly had interest in Andre Miller..move Roy to sg...

If the market is weak on miller..why not walsh take a peak at him as well..younger then Kidd?

All very good signs. I dont care what Okl is tossing out there they'd have to offer so much to force and sign and trade to get Lee to go there over staying with the Knicks. I mean seriously you'd never hear Lee's name again if he goes down there. In NY he's a borderline all-star, with the Grizz he's a nobody. It would take that kind of insane contract his agent is always boasting about 60+ mil for them to get him. Good luck with that....

Portland would be the only team of intrigue just because they are closer to being a winning team if that appeals to Lee, but as Hojo mentioned not sure how he really fits into their plans....and as 86 said great sign & trade opportunities there as well.

Lee's agent is trying to go the Boras route... but obviously the guy is bluffing his ass off:

Quote:
NBA free agents: Portland Trail Blazers considering New York Knicks forward David Lee - ESPN

Lee's agent said a dozen NBA teams are trying to find ways to acquire the power forward through sign-and-trade deals.

...

"All the elite teams are working hard to get him, and I know something is going to happen," Lee's agent Mark Bartelstein said Friday, as the first 72 hours of free agency were passing without Lee getting any offers for what Bartelstein believes his market value to be. He also pointed out that over the past 10 years (when the luxury tax was not an annual certainty, making market conditions far different than they are today), players entering free agency after averaging a double-double the previous season have been lucratively rewarded.
The problem for Bartelstein and Lee has been the power of the unknown -- no one having a clear idea of whether the Knicks would match."Joe Dumars and I had a long talk, and he really liked David a lot. David would have been a major target for them but he said 'Mark, if the Knicks match, I've lost Ben Gordon and everybody else I'm trying to get.' So this is a very difficult situation to operate under," Bartelstein said. "Even Toronto, they would have had to renounce all their players to get David -- and then they're not even sure they could get him."

...

Bartelstein refused to name any of the 12 teams he claims are interested in a sign-and-trade, though he did say "if you look at all the tams who feel they are one player away, they're all in there.

Even if thats the case I dont really care.

The fact that Lee's agent is already basically saying that the only option left is a sign and trade....that alone swings the ball right back into the Knicks court.

Now even if he does split, they can get some quality back. In fact, I'm trying to think of a team thats 1) Going to pay Lee ~50 million 2) also willing to give up talent back the other way. All those teams he's talking about being 1 player away...if Walsh plays his cards right they'll still be 1 player away with Lee and less cap room.

KNICKS MAKE GRANT OFFER; KIDD OUT - New York Post

....Meanwhile, the Knicks could get a point guard out of a David Lee sign-and-trade. They sit pretty on the Lee front. Only Portland has enough cap space to sign Lee outright, but the Blazers are not willing to offer him $10 million a year to be a backup to LaMarcus Aldridge. Any smaller offer, the Blazers believe, would be matched.

The Blazers are interested in a sign-and-trade and have discussed scenarios with Lee's agent, Mark Bartlestein, that has included Steve Blake and Travis Outlaw.

----------------------------------------------------
Any interest??

I know Outlaw is a high energy lunch pail guy too replaces Lee...I believe expires for 2010..Blake (pg) has had some good games for Blazers..and shoots the 3 well....could be a match..

Meh Outlaw doesnt really interest me....not much of a boarder. Blake is ok, but I'm not sure he fits this system. He's an odd PG. He can drive to the basket pretty well, but as soon as he does you don't really need to play D on him because the instant he crosses the 3P line, he's going to pass the ball. More than 1/2 of his shot attempts come from behind the 3 point line.

He's a backup IMO. To me, a PG in this system has to be a threat to score on a drive to collapse the defense to him. Blake is much more of a spot up shooter.

I'd be more interesting in Rudy Fernandez. 6'6" can shoot from all over the place.

Bartlestein is spewing BS all over the place, and getting called out for it. The guy won't have many clients after his clear mis-reading of the market.

Blazers' next move is a mystery - Behind The Blazers Beat

Quote:
Mark Bartelstein, who represents Lee, said Pritchard took the same approach with him - talking briefly with him on July 1, then more frequent calls after the Turkoglu deal flopped. Bartelstein said the Blazers are interested in Lee, a 6-foot-9 power forward/center, even though he plays positions where the Blazers appear well-stocked, with LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla.

"I don't think they operate like everyone else, where they have to fit everyone into a hole," Bartelstein said of the Blazers. "They work to acquire great, young players and they make it work. And that's what I think they are doing, trying to get the best players they can. And if (Pritchard) has an over-abundance of bigs? That's a good position to be in in the NBA."

A Blazers source shot down the team's interest in Lee, saying they like him as a player, but don't want to pay him what he wants.

I agree, and besides, Lee doesn't seem to be a fit on that team. They are not going to pay top $$$ for a backup to Aldridge...

Walsh is playing this well. I think Lee ends up staying here (which what deep down, the guy wants anyway, IMO).
