Report: Knicks to meet with Kidd – NBA - NESN.com

Quote:
With point guard Jason Kidd on the free agent marking, the word on the street was that the nine-time All-Star was hoping to sign with a championship contender.

Well, that theory may be out the window, with the Knicks scheduled to meet with Kidd on Wednesday.

The New York Daily News reports that Kidd’s first stop once free agency begins on Wednesday will be in New York with Knicks president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D’Antoni.

The report also states that the Knicks could sign Kidd to the mid-level exception or work out a sign-and-trade with the Mavericks.

Kidd, 36, is no stranger to the New York scene, having played six-plus seasons with the Nets. In 15 NBA seasons, Kidd has racked up more than 41,000 minutes, 15,000 points and 10,000 assists. While he’s not the same player he was in New Jersey, his mere presence on a Knicks team that went 32-50 last season could be more beneficial than his play.

Next year’s Knicks have yet to take shape, with forward David Lee and guard Nate Robinson set to become restricted free agents. Chris Duhon handled most of the minutes at the point last year, while the Knicks were either unable or unwilling to move up in last week’s draft to select European sensation Ricky Rubio.
Ugh, ugh, ugh. The only way I find this acceptable somewhat is if he is signed to the midlevel. If he is looking for a multiyear deal, he can hit the bricks.

Knicks to meet with free agent point guard Jason Kidd on Wednesday

Quote:
A league source told the Daily News Monday night that Kidd is scheduled to sit down with Knicks president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni early Wednesday. Kidd said in January that he would strongly consider signing with the Knicks.

Kidd, who helped the Nets reach back-to-back NBA Finals before being traded to Dallas two years ago, is giving the Mavericks the first chance to re-sign him. The future Hall of Fame point guard will speak with Dallas officials before he talks to the Knicks. It is believed that Kidd also will talk to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Knicks could sign Kidd to the mid-level exception or try to negotiate a sign-and-trade with Dallas. Since the Mavs traded Devin Harris two seasons ago for Kidd, Dallas figures to make a strong push to re-sign Kidd or at least get compensation for having mortgaged its future.

The Knicks' interest in signing Kidd is twofold. Team president Donnie Walsh is looking for an experienced floor leader as well as a player who could help recruit LeBron James should the Cavaliers' superstar and league MVP become a free agent next summer.

Kidd would be an upgrade over incumbent starting point guard Chris Duhon, but there are obvious risks attached to signing a 37-year-old player. And the Knicks also have to ask themselves why Kidd is so interested in joining a team that isn't vying for a championship. The obvious concern is that Kidd simply wants to spend his twilight years living and going out in Manhattan.

If the Knicks don't land Kidd, another option is restricted free agent Ramon Sessions, to whom the Bucks made a qualifying offer yesterday, enabling Milwaukee to match any bid.

The Knicks did the same with their two restricted free agents, David Lee and Nate Robinson. When asked last week if he would follow the time-honored tradition of contacting free agents at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, Walsh replied: "Do you really want me to call you at 12:01? Is it that important to you?" Walsh added with a laugh, "If it's that important to you, I'll call at 12:01."

Walsh maintains that his goal is to re-sign both Lee and Robinson, but the club is also open to a sign-and-trade with either player.

He's better than sessions. Just don't lock him up to a lot of years and money.

He's still a decent player, he's just a tool. What's his over/under on migraines here?

I dont mind the Knicks signing a vet for a year with the MLE, but it better be someone who comes and brings it every day regardless of the team's record. Kidd wasnt able to do that even after he whined his way out of Jersey

For 1 or 2 years..and LOW $$$..my be enticed..he is a PASS first pure PG..who can also BOARD...D non-existent...but what else is new on Knicks..plus he likely won't play BIG minutes anyway and be spelled by the new guy Douglas who is good defensively apparently..I think he will make the rest of the "kids" better and lead the fast break nicely..but he probably is trying to yank a couple of mil more out of Cuban and is using the Knicks..

A pass first PG means the ball is in Lebron's hands more often. That's the kind of thing that sways a player to signing.

The Knicks can do whatever they want over the next year as long as it doesn't hurt their chances to offer LeBron a max contract.

The way I see it, Kidd actually helps in enticing Lebron. With Kidd the Knicks could sneak into the 8th spot of the playoffs (Not a big deal because they have no first rounder next year). To me, that shows the 2010 class that the Knicks may be only one player away from being a contender. I wouldn't be opposed to giving Kidd a one year deal with an option, be it mutual or team, knowing that it could lead to Lebron.

That would be just about the only terms that would make it (signing Kidd) not so "ugh"...

Sessions is a pass first PG too....I understand he's not much more than Duhon with a quicker first step, but given the play of Duhon to start the year, that's really all the Knicks need right now.

Kidd was down to 9 points and 8 assists last year...on a team with a ton of offensive options and he can't stay with most PGs anymore.

Now I'm not saying Session is a better PG than Kidd, I just think he's on his last legs and I don't like his attitude....plus I still say the Knicks end up working a deal for Rubio and I don't want Kidd around bitching when the kid starts to take over.

as we all assumed... just using the Knicks to get a lil more

Jason Kidd has given the Dallas Mavericks a verbal commitment that he will re-sign with the team Wednesday, according to NBA front-office sources.

Kidd

Sources told ESPN.com that Kidd, 36, will receive a 3-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth in excess of $25 million.

Kidd elected to stay in Dallas in the face of a hard push from the New York Knicks, who last week offered Kidd the most they could ($19 million over three years).

Thats fine... on those terms.. THEY CAN HAVE HIM... I only would have taken him for 1-2 years..and for alot less $$ then that..

Hopefully they don't turn around and offer that same $$ to Grant Hill..as I feel the Knicks need him even less..

Supposedly Hill is only looking for the Bi-Annual Exception - 2 mil.

However if he's looking for that you'd figure he'd look to go to a contender, like Boston over NY.

If the Knicks could get him at that price however I'd love it. Not so much for Hill's skills, but more for his leadership and professionalism. He plays the game the right way on and off the court. Guys like Chandler and Danillo could also learn a TON from him as well. Much more than they are going to get from Harrington. He'd be a great mentor on this team.

This team right now, doesn't really have that kind of a leader. Rose used to fill that role a bit, but a part time, bit players, can't have the impact of a former star.
