New York Jets confirm inquiry about ex-Giants WR Plaxico Burress - NJ.com

Quote:
The Jets confirmed a report on ESPN Sunday that they had internal discussions about ex-Giants WR Plaxico Burress late last week.

"Consistent with our normal approach of performing our due diligence, we contacted Drew Rosenhaus several days ago prior to the draft to inquire about Plaxico's pending legal situation,'' said GM Mike Tannenbaum in a statement Sunday night. "However, we have had no discussions with Drew about Plaxico since that time.''

The Jets' decision not to draft a wide receiver had nothing to do with their inquiry about the controversial Burress, according to a person with knowledge of the Jets' thinking. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for the club.

"The Jets kicked the tires a little bit but it hasn't advanced beyond that,'' said the person.

Burress, a talented 6-foo-5, 232-pounder, is facing jail time resulting from an incident at a Manhattan nightclub last winter in which he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

As for the Jets not drafting a wide receiver, coach Rex Ryan said after the draft that David Clowney and Brad Smith need to step up and take advantage of their opportunity, as does second-year pro Marcus Henry.

P.S. -- Here's my take on this. I can't see it happening. I think Burress' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, leaked this to his pal, ESPN's Chris Mortensen, to get back at the Jets for drafting RB Shonn Greene. Remember, Rosenhaus' guy, Thomas Jones, is holding out and wants a new contract.

Rosenhaus wanted to make the Jets look bad for inquiring about Burress knowing the uproar it would create. Tannenbaum's determination to check into every possible way to improve his team can sometimes burn him.

eh...I don't see Plex in NFL next season anyway..so Jets need help at WR NOW... what I found more INTERESTING was something I mentioned elsewhere regarding the supposed attempt by Jets to TRADE back in to 1st round with Clev. to draft Percy Harvin(another ? character guy) ..

I am loving Sanchez and his potential to be the leader this team has sorely been lacking for years. IMO, he needs a veteran WR to help Cotch lead the rest of the group (Clowney, Henry, Stuckey, et al). At this rate, I'd see what a veteran like Harrison wants.

The list below has some interesting WRs still available, including Harrison..

Not sure if "Intersting" is the right word..most are scrubs and or problem/head cases..only other Toomer is too much like like Cotch... M. Jones like I said but he also has issues..
