Default Kurt Warner to Gang Green?

Discuss.

JETS SHOULD MAKE WARNER PLAN A - New York Post

Quote:
KURT Warner told us at the Super Bowl that he would wait for God to tell him whether to retire or play on.

Well, God told Warner yesterday that the Jets are in desperate need of a quarterback because Brett Favre retired.

The Jets are a win-now team in a win-now market, and Warner, a free agent, is a win-now quarterback . . . the only one on this barren market who makes sense. He would serve as a fail-safe bridge over troubled waters left by Favre's 4-gettable failure.

It would buy Rex Ryan time to find his own franchise quarterback, whomever that may be.

Luring Warner away from the Cardinals - and drafting a franchise quarterback to learn under his wing - would be my Plan A.

Somehow convincing Browns coach Eric Mangini to trade big-armed Derek Anderson - who was drafted by the Ravens in 2005 when Ryan was there - would be my Plan B. Kerry Collins, should free-agent negotiations fall apart with Tennessee, would be my Plan C.

Yes, Warner has expressed a desire to finish his career in Arizona, but he just lost offensive coordinator Todd Haley to the Chiefs, and disgruntled WR Anquan Boldin wants out. If Favre can play for the Jets, anything is possible, never say never.

If Warner can take the Cardinals -the Cardinals! - to a Super Bowl at age 37, why couldn't he take the Jets -the Jets! - to a Super Bowl at age 38, other than the fact they're the Jets?

Warner, always a Hall of Fame man, would return triumphantly to the scene of his 2004 semi-failure with the Giants as a Hall of Fame quarterback. Ryan can offer him an offensive line that can keep him upright and a defense that will have his back - OK, so no Larry Fitzgerald - and management can offer him a two-year, $20 million deal.

Just because it didn't work with Favre doesn't mean it couldn't work with Warner, who has more left in his right arm than Favre did in his. Warner wouldn't bring the same buzz, but I bet, given a running game, he wouldn't throw a league-high 22 interceptions.

It is impossible to write a "Thanks 4 the Memories" column for Brett The Jet, because there weren't enough of them - weren't enough of them to make the playoffs, weren't enough of them to save Mangini, weren't enough of them to collect that key to the city that Mayor Bloomberg longed to give him.

Even as the Jets publicly stated a death-wish desire to have Favre return, saying goodbye should have been a 4-gone conclusion the minute he trotted out of Giants Stadium and out of the 2008 season. Favre did the Jets a favor, saving GM Mike Tannenbaum $13 million in cap space, not holding the Ryan's Jets hostage to the endless conflict within his head and heart.

He was fun to watch, he made the Jets matter, he gave them hope, he sold a few PSLs for Woody Johnson and plenty of No. 4 jerseys. But in the end, when his team needed him most, he was Off-Broadway Brett.

The Jets rolled the dice and came up snake eyes.

Because they are the Jets, they will almost certainly not be in position to draft either of the two franchise quarterbacks - Matt Stafford (Georgia) or Mark Sanchez (USC) with the 17th pick in the 2009 draft.

Because they are the Jets, the other free-agent options are 39-year-old Jeff Garcia, Rex Grossman and Byron Leftwich.

Because they are the Jets, Kellen Clemens, the first quarterback drafted by the Tannenbaum-Mangini regime, has given no indication that he will be the quarterback of the future.

And as much as they like Brett Ratliff's promise, he has yet to throw a single NFL pass in anger.

You cannot turn a win-now team over to a novice.

I like Warner, but he won't be throwing to Fitz, Boldin and Breaston. Not even close.

That would be HUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEEEE F*ing mistake...

1. Not unless Boldin comes with him.

2. Will take up good amount of CAp SPACE..Jets have several needs..

3. Does not have receiving core to support him..see #1.

4. Meadowlands may not be Warner friendly with Winds/Cold..already prone to many fb's as well

5. no more old Qb's..

PASS !

I know Garcai is old too..but he would make a BETTER stop gap...short term..and has played in cold weather and had success in Philly...my only concern is the SYSTEM...

I can't imagine him leaving Arizona. He is in the perfect system for him and a weak division. Why would he wanna learn a new system and go to a team with far inferior talent on the offensive side of the ball? Imo even if Boldin isn't back Arizona still is a very good offensive team.

"Look, if you want paperwork, I’m not your guy," Minaya told SI’s Gary Smith. "I see the job in bigger terms. Paperwork, that’s false hustle. It takes away creativity."

The Jets should stick with the plan of a younger QB. I thought the same thing last year when they were rumored to either start Pennington or trade for Farve....let Clemens get his shot and see if they actually have something there or need to draft one.

Now they've got 2-3 young kids who they like...may the best one win...let them get their feet wet and see if they can be legit NFL QBs. Another stop gap vet just delays this process and leaves them in this constant "win now" mode without all the tools to actually win now.

The Jets have a good RB...hell they have 2 good RBs. They have a good O-Line. Pound the ball. Let the QB dink and dunk with the occasional deep fly so they dont get into trouble. Let Ryan build the defense into a force in the next year or two and slowly groom a QB to his system.

Warner would be the ultimate square peg for a round hole considering how this team is constructed right now.
