Default Shockey wants new role or trade

Quote:
Shockey told the Giants in December he wanted a changed role in the offense or a trade to another team, according to a person familiar with discussions between Shockey, the Giants' coaching staff and front office. The person, who requested anonymity because he isn't authorized to speak on behalf of Shockey or the Giants, said Shockey threatened to sit out the upcoming season if neither request was granted.
Quote:
Still, Shockey hasn't said much publicly about his role the past few years. But behind closed doors he has been as vocal as ever. According to someone who speaks with former Giants tight end Visanthe Shiancoe regularly, Shockey once told Shiancoe to stay with the Giants because Shockey wanted to leave, which would have left the starting spot to Shiancoe.

Apparently he's blaming all of his injuries on the blocking he has to do. Funny, I thought tight ends are just as responsible for blocking as they are for receiving. Maybe if you actually trained with the team instead of by yourself for all this time, you might actually last a whole season for the first time in your career.

Trade him. Who needs this malcontent? Try to get the Saints to throw in that safety or another draft pick, but if not, trade him straight up for their second round pick. I can't wait to be done with this overhyped, white trash ego maniac.

Agreed.

Trade Shockey, keep developing Boss, and scoop up a veteran TE as insurance.

Dead on... pick up a veteran BLOCKING TE and lets see what Boss can do over a full season.

The one thing that this does do is it puts a lot of pressure on Smith (unfortunately I think Moss is a lost cause at this point) to step up and be a major threat. He certainly showed that ability in the playoffs, but the playoffs also had Webster playing like a pro-bowl CB so who knows.

Either that or the Giants are going to have to draft a big play guy to keep defenses honest. The one thing that was great about Shockey was when he was "on" teams would have to spare multiple guys to keep him in check, which made it awfully tough to double up on Plax and/or jam the middle on the running game.

I'd love for them to get Harper from the Saints as well, but when you consider what the Patriots gave up for Moss a 2nd rounder wouldnt be a terrible return for Shockey considering the mess he's likely to cause if he's kept around.

Not really. Count me as one of the ones who thought after seeing the team go on one of the most remarkable late season runs in NFL history without his ass he just might learn to shut up a little bit and do his job. Little did I know he'd come back and apparently it's Eli's job he wants to do. I mean seriously "expanded role in the offense"?? What the hell is that sh*t?

Who's role does Coach Shockey plan on reducing exactly?

hey jerome, I got an idea, shut the **** up, catch some damn passes, stay healthy and then maybe the Giants will talk about an expanded role.

The amazing thing is there were reports that Shockey was more worried than excited to play again with the Giants after Eli's success during their late season run. He was worried that, if the offense struggled, Shockey would get blamed for it.

Talk about caring about yourself rather than the offense as a whole...

There were people wondering how Shockey would react to the success of the Giants without him, and I guess we know.

Sad that it has to come down to this.

Reese should only deal him if he gets a good deal. If it comes down to it and he chooses to sit out (very doubtful) so be it.

A lot of this is the fact that he (and Rosenhaus) are already talking about wanting a new deal even though he just got one.

There have been a lot of good deals lately in the NFL which included future considerations where the teams getting the picks made out better down the road.

From June 1st through the start of training camp this talk will probably resurface.

but it won't be with the Saints for starters so who's this team that will give up what we need for a guy who can't stay on the field?

Keep him. Hopefully, he's business smart and play to be traded.

Why won't it be the Saints? Because their GM said they weren't interested anymore?

Exactly. And I can't blame them. There was no way they were giving up and 2nd rounder and a good player for Shockey...and now they realize that the Giants are the ones who are "desperate" and said "no mas"
