Default Winter Leagues Start

MiLB.com actually has coverage of all Winter leagues now here:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/winterleagues/

The AFL started yesterday. Mike Carp is 1-6 with a 2B, BB, and 2 RBI. Caleb Stewart is still stuck in May with no hits...

Eddie Kunz got whacked around for 4 earned runs and 4 hits today in one inning. He did manage to get a K though...

Carlos Muniz threw a scoreless inning with a K and BB. Eddie Camacho gave up 2 unearned yesterday. He's 25, but his minor league numbers are not bad for an unsigned College FA...

In Hawaii, Nick Evans is nowhere to be found on the Waikiki roster despite being assigned by the Mets. Hector Pellot is hitting .269 with a SB and 5 RBI. Dan Murphy is at .280, with 3 2B's and 6 RBI. Emmanuel Garcia, .222 with an RBI. Sean McCraw is hitting a whopping .143...

Beach Boys pitching. Brant Rustich is somehow 2-0 with a 9.00 ERA, with 3 K's and a walk in 3 IP. Jose De La Torre is three times worse with a 27.00 ERA. Otherwise that's it. Not even a Corey Ragsdale or a Heitpas..

The Mexican league starts today. Brett Harper is playing for Aguilas de Mexicali. Matias Carrillo is playing for Culiacan. Carrillo is 20 year old lefty who split time between K-Port and Savannah in 2007, going 0-0 with a 3.04 ERA in 15 relief appearances.

The Dominican League starts on the 17th. Rosters coming in sporadically...

Escogido:

Waner Mateo
Moises Alou
Ambiorix Concepcion
Elvis Cruz
Carlos Gomez

Estrellas:

Jose A. Reyes
Leivi Ventura

Licey:

Ryan Cullen

Gigantes:

German Marte
Duaner Sanchez

The Venezuela League starts on the 11th with the following Mets. Rosters are still pending for some teams...

Jesus Feliciano* - Aruga
Nelson Portillo - Navegantes
Victor Zambrano - Tigres (Woops!)

There is no coverage of the PR Winter League, so where Gotay is playing is a mystery for now...

Well, it could be because there is NO PR Winter League... So for Gotay's sake, I hope he is headed for the DR...

Quote:
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The Puerto Rican winter baseball league, where the likes of Roberto Clemente, Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez once starred, canceled its upcoming season Thursday because of financial problems.

The league was supposed to start its 70th season in three months. Instead, it suspended operations and planned to spend the next year trying to reorganize.

Puerto Rico had participated in every Caribbean Series since the showcase began in 1949.

"Today is a day of mourning for Puerto Rican sport," said former St. Louis pitcher Mike Perez, president of the players' association on the island. "We knew the league was in a crisis but we didn't think this day would come."

The owners of the six teams voted unanimously to shut down a league that has seen a steady decline in attendance for the past decade, league president Jose Andreu Garcia said.

"It's no secret the league has been facing difficulties," Andreu said. "Confronted with this reality, we decided to evaluate what we have see what we can do in a reasonable amount of time."

The league was expected to hold talks with Major League Baseball to discuss a possible collaboration, including marketing efforts that might allow play to resume in the future.

Puerto Rico's league runs from October through January. This year's season was expected to feature Yadier Molina and his brother, Jose.

The league has a storied past, with Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Reggie Jackson all playing in Puerto Rico.

During a recent visit to the island, Aaron reminisced about his time as a teenage infielder for the Caguas Criollos in the mid-1950s.

"I wouldn't have gotten to the big leagues as quickly if I hadn't played in Puerto Rico," he said.

Wow, that sucks. No Caribbean World Series for PR then? Those players live for that thing...

Believe it or not, fan interest there has waned through the years.

I always made it a case to see a game or two during my annual PR winter sojourn. At times, the stadiums were more than half empty....

I knew the league was struggling, but not that bad. I read an article a couple of weeks ago about Panama and other countries (Curacao?) petitioning to be a part of Caribbean series. Looks like one of them will get in now, because a three team tournament would be pretty lame...

I didn't even know Panama had a league though, and it's pretty sad if they can support one while PR can't. They can claim Rivera, Carlos Lee, and Dennis Martinez. That's a pretty short list of stars compared to PR and the rest of Latin America...

Evans has a stress fracture in his hand and was sent home. De la Torre has some elbow pain and is also done for the winter.( Which explains the rough numbers.)

Thanks for the info. What's the deal with the Mets and broken hands lately? Evans looks to be ready for AA if healthy, but Carp should be repeating the level in 2008 unless he makes huge strides in the AFL. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out...

AFL Update (10-15)

Mike Carp - 21 AB's .286/.375/.381, 2 2B, 5 RBI
Mike Nickeas - 6 AB's, 1 2B
Caleb Stewart - 9 AB's, .333, 1 HR, 1 RBI

Eddie Kunz - 3.0 IP, 24.00 ERA, 3 K's ~ maybe he's a little tired?
Adam Bostick - 2.0 IP, 4.50 ERA, 1 K
Eddie Camacho - 3.0 IP, 3.00 ERA, 1 K
Carlos Muniz - 3.0 IP, 3.00 ERA, 4 K, 1 BB

Scottsdale was said to be the most loaded team in the AFL, but they're 0-6. High profile arms like Max Scherzer, Rickey Romero (picked ahead of Pelfrey and Tulowitzki), and David Purcey are getting shelled...

Kick the Mets while they're down BA! What happened to all fluff articles? Rarely do you see one this negative...

Quote:
Several scouts aren’t sold on Mets’ first baseman Mike Carp, a ninth-rounder out of high school in 2004. “I don’t believe in the power at all,” said a scout from a National League club. “He doesn’t make good, hard contact, he’s inconsistent in his approach and swings and misses too much. And he’s not going to play anywhere else but first base. His performance here defines what he is for me.” In 43 at-bats, Carp is hitting .256/.333/.349 with 10 strikeouts . . .

Last time I heard Martinez was rehabbing on his own, either in STL or the DR. I haven't seen Guerra or Pena on a roster at all. Guerra's probably being handled with kid gloves, and Pena caught 103 games as a 17 year old. He deserves a rest. Gomez just returned after missing a few weeks thanks to a fastball upside the head...

There are some lower levels in Winter Ball that some prospects might be playing in, but it's tough to find info.. I know Wilmer Flores was playing in a Venezuelan League and doing well...

The prospects sent to the Hawaii League performed much better than their AFL counterparts though. Their was a lot more offense this year for whatever reason...

Emmanuel Garcia was great (.348/.427/.485) before being selected for the Canadian national team at the Baseball World Cup....

Lucas Duda replaced Garcia and tore it up as well (.340/.390/.660, 3 HR, 13 RBI in 53 AB's). He will probably skip low A and go straight to St. Lucie...

Dan Murphy was pretty solid (.274/.343/.495, 4 HR, 21 RBI)...

Hector Pellot was Hector Pellot. Still very raw with occasional hot streaks...

Sean McCraw was terrible...

As for Pitchers, Brant Rustich struggled (17 IP, 19 H, 5.82, 17 K, 11 B)...

Jose De La Torre threw two miserable innings before being shut down with an injury...

Nick Carr replaced De La Torre and was pretty inconsistent (12.1 IP, 11 H, 3.65, 10 K, 10 BB). He had a couple of real good outings but struggled with his control at times...
