AFL

The Peoria Saguaros began the AFL season with a 9-3 victory over Scottsdale. Daniel Murphy played the entire game at 2B, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. There are no other second basemen listed on the roster, so Murphy should get plenty of work in. Jason Vargas also returned from the dead to contribute a scoreless inning, while Tobi Stoner earned the win with two innings of one run ball...

Notes:

Sickels just did a top 20 for 2009 Twins prospects. Kevin Mulvey comes in at #7 with a B- grade. Deolis Guerra and the Shark were honorable mentions, which is quite a fall. I think it's safe to say that at least Niese and Holt will be rated higher than any of them...

From Metsblog:The bloggers from Ladies Locker Room were out in Peoria, AZ, to catch an Arizona Fall League game this past weekend, during which they interview a variety of players.

However, according to their most recent post, Mets 2B Daniel Murphy did not play over the weekend.

He was seen wearing a wrap around his forearm on Saturday, most likely due to an in-game collision that took him to the hospital on Friday night.

Murphy is not in today’s lineup as well, according to MiLB.com.

I'm sure the Mets medical staff are taking a trip to Arizona to put a cast on his leg.

Update on Murphy...

Mets Blog

Quote:
Daniel Murphy, the Mets New York Mets ' impressive young outfielder who is playing second base in the Arizona Fall League, is expected to return to action in a day or two after taking a spike to the forearm in last Friday night's "Rising Stars" all-star game. Murphy had to be taken to a Phoenix-area hospital because of the cut to his arm and hasn't played since then.

Murphy filled in for Kunz (who might have whip-lash) on the blog this week. Sad news that Bowman has left the team to be with his ill father. Guy can't catch get a break...

Mets in the AFL

Thole and Vargas have been real impressive. Thole had a better year in the FSL than Murphy did at the same age last year, albeit with less power. If he can learn how to catch and keep developing some pop he'll become an interesting prospect. Vargas has only allowed five hits in 12.2 scoreless innings...
