The other story I've heard is that he was ticked that he didn't win some sort of "Mets Fans Hall of Fame" that the Mets were running or some promotion where other fans voted for their favorite Met fan. There's no question that this guy, like Fireman Ed, had an exaggerated self-importance about him. Having said that, he's a good footnote in Mets history, and shows why Met fans are unique from Yankee fans. May he rest in peace.
