Default Serious Thread (I promise) Debate the Merits -

Opinions? I think that if Omar/Wilpon uses either Martinez or Gomez as deal breakers they will need to avoid a lynch mob at Shea next year. ESPECIALLY if one or the other busts...

NL Exec Believes Mets Will Land Santana | Hot Foot

“Mets get Santana, but it’s going to cost them both outfielders (Carlos Gomez, Fernando Martinez) and two of their pitching prospects. I see Cincinnati snagging Bedard if they are willing to go Bailey-Votto-Cueto. Baltimore will have to come down from their demands and have already decided Bedard has very little chance to begin the year in their rotation, no matter what they are saying to the media.”

so they give up both outfielders, which of the two pitchers are going out of Pelfrey, Humber and Mulvey?

I'm w/ Frank here. I think the Mets should send any prospect that the Twins want. If they do not have to trade Reyes to get Santana you do any other deal, but getting Santana is a priority.

If the 2 outfielders going means that the Mets keep Pelfrey, thats a good thing. Give the kid some consistency somewhere and maybe he becomes a contributer, maybe he changes the image he created and nets someone they need at the deadline in the very least.

So I dont disagree, just reading the blurb about 2 pitching prospects...this is way better than all 3 plus 2 outfielders.

Mets should get Santana and with Maine and Perez they would have 3 solid young pitchers. They will have to use free agency and maybe hope the one prospect they keep works to fill out rotation. I can live with that.

And how will they fill out the OF? Especially with Alou missing half the season and Beltran's tendency to be less than 100% healthy.

One call from Willie and Bernie is on his way out of retirement.

With that kind of rotation top 4 I'd be happy with Endy Chavez just playing great defense and moving runners over.

Something tells me that YOU will (in about five years) if this were to actually happen.

"Look at how good all five of these guys are!!! Omar is such an asshat for not driving a harder bargan with the Twins back in 2007-2008!!!!!!!!!!"

If the Mets make the playoffs in 2 of 08/09/10 with Santana finishing in the Cy Young top 3 2 or 3 years this deal is still good even if the Twins make those guys into 3+ All Stars.

The Mets, economically, are not a team that should dictate its organizational philosophy around the dependence of prospects contributing.

What about Martinez and the point that I made in the other thread (that you said was "good and interesting") with regards to Omar not wanting to trade him or Guerra due to his long term plans in the DR?

If they are that good in about 5 years we can sign them as free agents because Twins still wouldn't be able to afford them.

I've spent some time thinking on this (it's not often that a MOFO post gives me more than a moment's pause).

I just don't think that a teenager is a deal breaker. Besides - do poor Dominicans want to play for the Mets or play in MLB? The Met "instructional camp" is a very accessible tool for poor Latinos to get their feet in the door of pro ball. I really don't think that which organization works them through would be a concern.

Frankly, I think that a poor SS would thank Omar even if he ended up on the DRays......
