Default ESPN: Twins Want Humber,Pelfrey,Mulvey,Martinez & Gomez for Santana

ESPN - Mets among teams reportedly still alive in Santana sweepstakes - MLB

From the article, not sure how true it is, would you do it?

Quote:
The most surprising aspect of those talks to some baseball people is that the Mets remain in the mix. It may be because the Twins would like to move Santana to the National League if possible. But while the Mets have made a four-for-one offer built around center fielder Carlos Gomez, indications are that the teams remain far apart.

It's believed the Mets offered Gomez, two of their three best young pitchers (Mike Pelfrey, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey) and another prospect for Santana earlier this month. But according to one source who has spoken with the Mets, the Twins want the Mets "to rip up their whole farm system" for Santana.

Another source said he believes the Twins countered by asking for all three pitchers, along with Gomez and much-ballyhooed outfield prospect Fernando Martinez. The Twins originally asked for Jose Reyes. But one baseball man with knowledge of those talks says that possibility was dismissed "a long time ago."

Unacceptable and absurd considering the packages that the Yankees and Red Sox had offered.

Ever since that Kazmir deal, every team thinks they can rape the Mets for whatever they want. But I agree, f*ck the Twins!!!

No, but I'd do it if Pelfrey and Martinez are not in the package.

Humber, Mulvey, Gomez is fair enough considering they are so "hot for Gomez and to trade this guy to the NL"

That aside, shelling out 150million for this guys extension makes this a complete joke.

I agree, I understand they are shooting for the moon but how can they actually expect the Mets to pony up that many players when they know what kind of offers the Twins have received so far?

On it's own, you want to slap Omar for not taking it. But considering the Twins seem prepared to just hand over Santana to the Yankees because...well, because they are the Yankees, this offer is a rip-off.

It's a very steep price, but is Kevin Mulvey or Phil Humber really worth not getting Santana? Will it really make that much of a difference if we have Santana & Mulvey or just Santana? Hell, I like the fact that we don't have to trade Heilman, so our bullpen doesn't become an even larger hole.

Santana may be a veteran but he is still young and is quite possibly the biggest impact player in all of baseball. He slots into this team and becomes part of a core that can realistically win for the next 7 years. Bring in Santana and we are suddenly the perennial favorite in the NL.

I don't care what the Yankees would have to pay. I care about his value to the Mets, and he's worth every bit of that trade package. I'll take 95+ wins and a trip to the World Series over the intact pride of my favorite team's front office.

For the record lets recap the popular sentiments:

1.) The Yankees overhype their prospects and the league bends over for them, yet no one will do this for the Mets.
2.) The Mets prospects suck and have been mishandled. They have no value.
3.) The Mets prospects are too valuable to dump into a trade for Johan Santana.

So basically, you'd do it if the best 2 prospects in the rumored deal are removed?

Twins can have either one or the other of Martinez, Gomez, and preferably Gomez.

The pitchers? I am not that high on any of them, but I think I am most interested in keeping Humber. He has good make up and another year of rehab under his belt... I actually look for something out of him this year.

First ask for Delmon Young on top of Santana, then, when the Twins refuse - do it before their management wakes up from their stupors.

Ask yourself this - who would have more impact on the Met team for the next 6 or so years -

Johan Santana or that assortment of maybes?-

I'd ask why are we only worried about the next 6 years when some of these kids could be around long after that.

My biggest issue with dealing these kids all at once would be that it will severely limit the teams options to fill holes through trade during the season and possibly for a couple of years until the farm fills back out.
