yet another option for BACK END of ROTATION IF...IF....IF Mets have to give up the Farm in a trade for Johan(still a pipe dream),,someon would need to be a #5..and under that scenario...worth a look...I certainly take him over LOUSE...you know Lieber won't be afraid to pitch in NY..

But otherwise.... PASS.

If the Mets trade for Johan wouldnt the rotation look like:

Santana
Martinez
Maine
Perez
Hernandez

Albeit he is injury prone I'd think any MLB team would kill to have El Duque as their #5 guy.

"We've been in contact with the Mets, but as we sit here today it'd be wrong to suggest something is imminent," Gary said last night. "There has been a lot of interest in (Lieber) from other teams. ... But he has absolutely no problem with the idea of pitching in New York. He liked pitching in New York with the Yankees and he likes to win."

Translation: The Mets aren't really interested, but we'd sure like to mention they are to drive up his price.

DING..

I think if we put him in the Pen we can perhaps keep him "fresh" throughout..and come playoff time can really be an effective weopon in setting up for wagner/heilman.. OR... you could even go to 6 man rotation(NOT SKIPPING JOHAN).. as Pedro can always use the extra rest and Ollie and Maine are still BUILDING towards being 200+ innings guys..

I'm actually more interested in the bottom paragraph, that says Mark Prior acknowledged that the Mets made him a "lucrative" offer.

At least we know Omar isn't Terry Schiavo-ing his way through the winter.

I'm all for El Duque being in the rotation...he was very effective there last year. Who's to say keeping him in the pen will keep him any healthier? I mean in 06 he got hurt jogging...

I have no problem with him at #5 either...just know he WON'T last..so a "caddie will be necessary...and perhaps in the pen..if he is not pitching EVERY fifth day...odds suggest he may last ENTIRE SEASON...as long as he eases up on the jogging..

ya have 3/5's of the rotation full of injury plagued pitchers pushing 40(El Duque is probally 60), what a way to run the 3rd largest market team. God bless you Fred Wilpon. **** Santana who needs him? Lets just plug in any 3 starting pitchers with a awful bullpen and hope that leads us to the promised land.

I was thinking it was a lot like one of those plastic Bic cigarette lighters...

...you know, when it's just about out of lighter fluid.

is there any refuting that the catch of the offseason is Santana? if the Mets are in on Santana and by all accounts they are, then why would they deal for anyone else until it becomes clear what Minnesota intends to do, and if their intention is to wait out the market until say the trading deadline, then would you rather the Mets show up to that table empty handed or with a full deck?
