Default Prior OFF the Market...

The Official Site of The San Diego Padres: Official Info: Press Release

Padres agree to terms with pitcher Mark Prior

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with right-handed pitcher Mark Prior. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Prior missed the entire 2007 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder on April 24, 2007. His last Major League action came with the Chicago Cubs during the 2006 season, going 1-6 with a 7.21 ERA (35 ER/43.2 IP), 38 strikeouts and 28 walks in nine starts.

"Mark Prior is a competitor and is working hard to regain the form that made him one of the great young pitchers in the game," Towers said. "We are confident he is going to help us in our rotation this season. It's exciting that Mark is coming home to San Diego to pitch for the Padres."

Over his five-year career, Prior has already tallied 21 double-digit strikeout games compared to 65 outings in which he has issued two or fewer walks. He is averaging 10.37 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched and has recorded a career-high 16 strikeouts on two occasions (6/26/03 vs. MIL and 9/30/04 vs. CIN).

A native San Diegan and graduate of University of San Diego High School, Prior was selected by the Cubs in the first round (second overall) of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern California. Over five Major League seasons with the Cubs (2002-06), Prior is 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA (256 ER/657.0 IP), 757 strikeouts and 223 walks, while limiting opponents to a .235 average in 106 starts.

I'd like to see the actual terms of that 1 year deal before I go proclaiming it worth the risk.

Yeah, and pitching at home had nothing to do with him signing with the Padres.

ESPN - Padres add Prior to pitching mix - MLB

Mark Prior, cut loose by the Cubs earlier this month, has agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres.

Prior Problems

In 2003, Mark Prior went 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA, was selected to the All-Star Game and finished third in the Cy Young voting. He has won just 18 games in 57 starts since.

2003 Since*
W-L 18-6 18-17
ERA 2.43 4.27
Opp. BA .231 .241
Starts 30 57
*Did not pitch in 2007

Prior receives a one-year major league deal with a $1 million base salary. The contract, which doesn't include an option, contains incentive clauses that could take the total value of the deal to over $3 million.

You guys realize that Prior lives in San Diego right? His agent already stated they were only going to take a 1 year deal, so he can go into next year's market after proving himself.

1 year deal

+

Hometown

+

Pitchers Park

+

75 degrees EVERY day

= Easy decision

I think SD matches anything up to 4.5 - 5 mil. You think Prior deserves more than that?

See Glavine, Tom.

That was chump change to the Mets, it's not hard to think he'd have stayed away from home for one more year to make more money than what the Pads offered.

Right now, the Mets have NO depth pitching wise. Gotta be taking fliers on guys like him and even Garcia.

Didn't McEwing make more than that per year?

I assume if he was Marc Priorez and he was 20 years older he'd have gotten 3 year deal
