Default Twins Giftwrapping Santana to Yanks for Christmas

Johan Santana-S-Twins Dec. 26 - 10:17 am et

According to the New York Times, the Twins have lessened their demands for Johan Santana and are no longer asking for Ian Kennedy along with Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera.
Instead, the newspaper reports that Minnesota is willing accept Jeffrey Marquez in place of Kennedy. Marquez isn't in Kennedy's class as a prospect, but he's still a solid young arm with good upside and if the Twins trade Santana to the Yankees they'd be doing so primarily in order to get their hands on Hughes.

If they ship Santana to the Yankees for THAT package they deserve all of the 1st round playoff exits that they'll receive from the hands of Santana himself.....

Phil Hughes is better than John Lester. If I were the twins I would do that deal before the Sox deal.

Inevitable. It is the best trade package out there and all teams bend over for the Yanks.

Laughable.

Melky would be considered a bench player on any other team, but because he's with the Yanks he's considered a viable part in a trade for the best pitcher in the game. So basically, it's for Hughes and a mid level prospect? Hughes has amazing stuff, but his '07 showing wasn't great by any means overall and he has to be considered the only really viable player in this deal.

Does anyone else feel that certain GMs eventually give in to nothing more than a phonecall from the Yanks saying "Go on, you know ya wanna." and an autographed photo of Jeter?

If that's what the Twins can get for him, they would be wise to just hold on Santana and go for the gold in 2008 and then let the chips fall where they may.

Of course, instead the Yankees win (again) and Minnesota is left crying in their beer (again). And the Mets will respond by jacking up ticket prices even more, since it really was 1 1/2 bad weeks since they did win a few games those last two weeks.

They don't have to accept anything.

I don't think that the Twins get anywhere near the haul at the trade deadline as they would during this offseason.

No team is going to sell the farm unless they are ensured that they have the guy for 5-7 years. Wouldn't it be hard to negotiate a trade, get a window AND sign him to an extension during the season?

Hughes is gonna be awesome and the Twins know it. I wouldnt mind seeing the skanks make that deal and watch their payroll skyrocket out of control again.

During the rare times the McGimpy goes down to the ground (such as to change trees for food), it moves very slowly.

Well this was inevitable. This offseason is a prelude to a long 2008 season. Lets hope they can develop a couple of major league pitchers (Pelfrey? Humber?) and put themselves in a position to win it all in 2009. Its not happening in 2008. While they're at it, perhaps they could have a good draft as well.

Its out of control right now. After 2008, Giambi, Pettite, Abreyu and Matsui (i think) all come off the books. They could probably sign Santana and a few more all stars just to bring the $$$ back to the 210 million mark.

Like the Yankees actually care about that.
