No, they won't be asshats, but this much is true- they'll suck as bad as a team whose 1-2-3 SPs are Pedro Martinez and two 15 game winners possibly could. We'll be as embarrassed by a lineup of Reyes-Castillo-Beltran- Wright as the top four as we were by the Mets of 1979, 1995, or 2002.

Never will an 89 win team be such a disappointment.

Why?

Because this is a team on the cusp of greatness; so close to being the cream of the national league, yet still to be regarded as something of a joke.

So- without further ado "Your 2008 New York Mets- They Don't Suck!"

I think it will be tough for this team to embarass itself and its fans on the kind of grand scale it did in 2007...

I think 2008 has many, many tinier embarassments in store for us. Things like Wright and/or Reyes talking "hypothetically" about what it would be like to play somewhere else, or Delgado stylin' on fly balls to the warning track, or Santana no-hitting the Mets during an interleague game with the Yanks while Colon/Lohse/whoever gets his brains beat in, or Milledge hitting like 10 homers in 19 games against the Mets, or Wagner forcing a trade by burning some bridges through the press... nothing too massive, but stuff just depressing and just frequent enough to make it torture.

I've said before that because of the players you've listed they have to be essentially considered contenders in an otherwise crappy NL East. But what isn't taken into account by looking at the players is the shitty attitude, lazy play and poor fundamentals that was as much their undoing as the piss poor bullpen. The teams hierarchy has made it clear that they're glossing over the main problem as a 2 week aberration (yeah, "they can't rip the team publically" blah blah blah - other teams let their players know their attitude won't be accepted without recourse to the tired "it's fine" platitudes spewed by the Mets). Until we see some actual steps taken to correct that, people thinking this team may well suck next season is NOT indicative of bad fandom, and is an entirely vaild point. I went through most of the season being an optimist simply because I can't be bothered wasting the energy being doom and gloom for the sake of it, but it's pretty clear they have thus far done nothing to address the fundamental flaws of the team.

But hey, they got position players to help the pitching. As you do.
