Default Maybe it's not so crazy...

to consider trading a prospect for a solid middle-reliever/set-up man that would allow us to move Heilman into the starting rotation. It's apparent from the fact that we're considering signing scrubs like Livan and Kyle Lohse that the blockbuster trade for a top-of-the rotation starter isn't going to happen...so why not trade Gomez or Humber for a guy we know can help us in the 'pen and give Heilman his shot at starting? He certainly can't be any worse than these other losers we're considering signing.

I'd be all in favor of letting Heilman compete for a starting spot. But I doubt it will ever happen. The organization loves him as a reliever, I guess.

But if they ever do give him this chance, it might also be interesting to see if any of the young pitchers could take his place in the bullpen.

Omar said on the Hot Stove show that Heilman is a "2-pitch" pitcher, which makes him better suited to be in the pen. He'd have to add pitches to his repertoire if he wants to start, and I'd be very surprised if they haven't told him this.

FOX Sports on MSN: Aaron Heilman - Scouting

Quote:
Pitching & Defense
Heilman tried to be too fine with his pitches, particularly early in the count, when he returned to the big leagues. Despite walking only one batter in his final start, he issued an average of 4.17 walks per nine. The key for Heilman is to keep his pitches down in the strike zone since he cannot overpower hitters, especially above the belt. His fastball sits in the low 90s, and his slider and changeup are above-average offerings, though inconsistent. Heilman is no better than an average fielder but holds runners well, allowing only one stolen base last year in the majors. He appears destined to replace Al Leiter as the game's worst hitter among pitchers.

Heilman's slider is above average because he never really throws it. Hard to hit it if you never see it...

Kind of like having sex with Bigfoot.

A lot of guys are, basically, "2-pitch" pitchers. You consider Tom Glavine's repertoire more extensive because he mixes in the occasional curveball? Heilman's stuff is good enough to make him a respectable fourth starter. Seems kinda ridiculous to hold him back because he doesn't have a good "show me" pitch.

Does anyone remember when Aaron used to crank his fastball up to 95+ at the height of his dominance as a reliever? Or is that just me, not remembering clearly?

I can kind of sort of picture him hitting 94, if I strain myself and think wishfully. But I can't remember him ever hitting 95+ regularly.

You're probably right. Maybe we should clap harder, he might hit 95 MPH then.

He was hitting 94-95 with regularity in the second half of the '06 season. I don't believe he was throwing harder than 92-93 most of this year though.

Padrino said if we clap harder he'll turn into a Zito Santana hybrid that throws a sick new pitch called a curveup.
