| Rockies, Vizcaino reach deal : Rockies : The Rocky Mountain News Rockies, Vizcaino reach deal By Tracy Ringolsby, Rocky Mountain News Originally published 04:46 p.m., December 14, 2007 The Rockies have reached an agreement with free-agent Luis Vizcaino, a right-handed reliever, a baseball source confirmed today. Pending the results of a physical, Vizcaino will sign a two-year deal with the Rockies. The value of the contract is not known. Vizcaino, 30, would give the Rockies a strikeout reliever, a piece that was missing from their bullpen last season. In 77 games with the Yankees in 2007, he struck out 62 batters in 751/3 innings. He recorded a 4.30 ERA and 8-2 record. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Per WFAN deal was 2 yrs/7.5 mil Rockies now with a BP of Vizcaino/Fuentes/Corpas.. Not bad.. So who is left worthwhile?? DoteL? What the Hell is OMAR doing now a days ANYWAY ??? Not a peep... |

| Omar is currently vacationing in the Dominican Republic, his job is done as he got us pitching, speed, hitting, and bullpen releif. Maybe if were lucky he will find us a 15 year old prospect there with a ton of potential who the Mets will find a way to ruin. |

| Yeah - It really does seem like Omar is sleeping throught this offseason. Although I can't say I was enamored of Vizcaino's abilities anyway.

| May I address the elephant in the room? Luis Vizcaino stinks. Like every other righty reliever on God's green earth, he's had a few reasonable years, but he's maybe 2% more likely to post an ERA under 4 (or however you choose to measure a decent year for a reliever) than Joe Bag O' Donuts. I understand the frustration a lot of you feel than Omar hasn't done anything yet, but Luis Vizcaino would not really have been a serious answer. Would he have provided depth? Sure, but there's still dozens of guys out there who are in about the same career trajectory as Vizcaino who could be had at a similar or cheaper price.

Not saying Vizcaino was the STUD ANSWER to Mets BP woes..but saying he stinks is not fair either..MOTA STINKS..can't compare the two.. Vizcaino was a workhorse for $kanks last year and was used by Torre in many key situations..and in AL still held opponnets to .235 ba..and year before that in NL..he has a pretty damn good season as setup man in Arizona..so he DEFINATELY could have been a useful addition to a PEN that NEEDS arms..and for the price..not exhorbitant in years or $$. So just who are the DOZEN or so available relievers you feel Omar should target that can be considered as useful? I for one would like to know what Omar's PLAN B or should I say PLAN A is for pen since he seemingly isn't targetting ANYONE..you don't hear Dotels name anymore not even Chacon..so what gives.. | |

Maybe "stinks" was a little strong, but Vizcaino is not a big deal, and even for better relievers than Vizcaino, a reasonable previous year does not mean a repeat future year is up ahead. Quote:
IMO, Vizcaino's no better a bet to turn in a solid 2008, than, for example, recent non-tenders Kiko Calero or Matt Wise, or free agents Dotel or Rudy Seanez, or whoever the better guys are who are looking to get back into baseball after a year out of the major leagues (like Darren Oliver) or in Japan (like Pedro Feliciano), or veterans who have been in seeming rapid decline (like Roberto Hernandez) or pitchers who aren't really young anymore but who have good stuff and haven't really put it all together yet (like Duaner Sanchez). It's a leap of faith, but relievers who sign big deals hardly ever work out and other relievers seem to fall out of the sky all the time.

| Guys - Vizcaino STINKS. He had a nice 2 month run at the middle of the season between sucking in april and may and blowing later on. I am not even close to being an apoligist of the mets or Omar, but this guy is Mota. The reports said it was 4 years 19 million! Even the Yanks said that he was pricing himself out of town! Of course, we are going to need a Bull Pen Public Enemy #1, he would have fit that role very nicely.

| Smart teams build their pen from within. You invest the $ into aces or position players. Let the farm throw out #5's and scrap relievers. I bet Baltimore would love Pelfrey/Heilman more than Dannys Baez and the other shitballs they have. It's a dangerous game to play, giving $ to those middle relievers. And since Omar and Fred didn't go 'over slot' in the last 2 drafts, instead focusing on relievers, he damn well better have a great bullpen for 2008-2010 that's cheap and productive. |
