Default Metsblog: Johan Wants Us

I just don't see how we can pull this off but it's nice to see that Johan wouldn't mind being on the Mets. Seriously, is there anyway that this could get done without Reyes??

Essentially, Johan holds all the power in this situation. He could be a dick and refuse to sign an extension with any other team, making the Mets effectively the only team he can be traded to. If he really does intend to be a Met he may even have informed the Twins of this already. If he wants to be a Met, he'll be a Met.

His site is partnered with SNY, so I don't think he'd write anything that was completely false.

I wouldn't necessarily put too much stock in Cerrone, but it makes some sense in the fact that the Mets are still apparently players in the Santana sweepstakes despite all of their various packages being rejected over and over again. Most other organizations have a clear advantage in terms of the talent they're offering, the only thing I can see going for the Mets and keeping them in it would be them being Santana's preference.

Also the Mets seem willing to "mortgage the farm" and give them many more players. Sox don't want to part with Ellsbury or Lester. I think the Tigers-Marlins trade set the tone. That is, if you want a marquee player then quantity (as well as quality) is important as well. Pelfrey, Humber, Gomez, Heilman, and Church sounds reasonable to me. Then we should sign Vizcaino to replace Heilman and go with:

Santana
Pedro
Maine
Perez
Livan, Mulvey or some other ST Invite

I'm starting to lean towards the "dont do the deal" side. If he wants to be a Met then he can sign here as an FA and I want to see Pedro, Pelfrey and crew pitch before mortgaging the future.

I say to Johan:

PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS...

Wanna be a Met...prove it... Push the botton with you CURRENT employer to ONLY TRADE YOU TO METS...thus:

A. Making them the ONLY option and
B. Put the Mets in a better position to get deal done(meaning not raping the ENTIRE FARM)
C. Sign for "reasonable" $$ when the time comes...

But we know the reall option is

D. NONE OF THE ABOVE...

I have to agree. As much as I want Santana in a Mets uniform, it all depends on just how much its going to cost the Mets. If the only way it happens, is to bankrupt the farm system, I have to say pass. If something reasonable can be done, that works for both sides, then I hope Omar can make it happen.

Every time I hear Reyes name involved, I cringe. I hope Omar runs far far away from that idea !

If you can get the deal done without Reyes you do it. Rape the system? Our system sucks? Do we ever develop major league players that stick here.

Let's go. Johan just might make me excited for a season I am not looking forward to whatsoever.

I'm stunned after the disaster the 2007 Mets were that anyone would want to play for this team, least of all the best pitcher of the decade. Color me skeptical.

I read a report a few days ago that he wanted to

A.) Go to the NL

B.) Be able to hit

So, it's not that surprising. And he wants to be in NY. I can see it happening...and the 'eat crow' threads that'll follow (I'll have my fork and ketchup)

Honestly, who cares if we trade 4 minor leaguers for the best pitcher in baseball. As long as Santana is healthy, getting him would nearly guarentee a playoff spot for the Mets for the next 6-8 years (depending how long they offer him a contract for). You can build a dynasty off a guy like him (as long as you don't have the Twins payroll).

Agreed, short of Wright and Reyes you have to make anyone else available and throw as many of them as needed at the Twins to lock him up. You know if he makes it to Free Agency the Mets with screw it up somehow, so the time to do it is now.
