Default Manny will be a Met in 2009

Yep, you heard it here first. . . that is, if Gomez goes in a package for a pitcher sometime this week.

As it stands, if Gomez puts in a solid year mostly at AAA in 2008 he should slot in nicely to take over leftfield in 2009. But if he goes in a trade (which I anticipate) than the Mets are going to have to go shopping next winter for another bat to replace Alou. I checked it out and the two big outfield names going to market after 2008 are Manny and Vlad. The Angels will put up a HUGE fight to keep Vlad, but I'll bet anything that Epstien will just let Manny go just like he let Pedro and Damon walk as opposed to overpaying for guys who are in the latter career stages. You know that those types of concerns, for better or worse, will not stop Omar for one second though.

I'll bet that he would get a five year deal at about what he is pulling down now. This will take him up to age 41. The question is: can he hold up the production that far? Steroids aside, people are in better shape now.

We will see, but watch it happen people. Watch it happen.

Am not betting AGAINST this happening..but I WOULD NOT want the Mets to GO after him for FIVE YEARS.. 2+1 or 3 THE MOST.. depending on how he holds up this season.. I personally was clamoring for him for YEARS NOW..but at this point..depending on the commitmernt/price... too late.

Best pure hitter in the game. He is so patient. Even if he is down 0-2 he will likely come out on base. I'd take him in a heartbeat.

They will trade Gomez and Humber for him in the middle of the season when he is clearly showing signs of being washed up.

Nobody is giving Manny a 5 year deal. Even MANNY isn't that dumb.

I miscalculated a bit. The Red Sox actually have options on him for 2009 and 2010 ($20 million each year). Who knows if Epstien will pick them up or not.

I'll still be surprised though if Gomez is a Met by Friday. With that said, we are going to need a leftfielder in 2009.

If Red Sox get Johan..they have to PAY him a ton...that may make dumping Manny's option a necessity..
