Default An interesting take on Reyes' 2nd half slump...

Warning: This is going to be one of those "sources" posts, so feel free to believe it or not believe it, but definitely give it some thought and discussion...

Recently, a friend of a friend was talking to someone at a sporting event who works for the New York Mets (hint, they were in my avatar this past season).

Anyways, they asked the Mets employee why they think Reyes turned into such a different player in the 2nd half of 2007. Basically, Jose Reyes has no idea what he wants to do with his life right now. He grew up in the minor leagues with David Wright, but now they are on two seperate paths. Money issues aside (they didn't think the whole contract issue comes into play for any of this), Reyes is jealous of Wright. Reyes lives in a home with his parents and his girlfriend and his two (or three, I forget) kids. Apparently, he doesn't want to marry his girlfriend (but he does want to take care of his kids, he's no Ordonez). He rushes home after games to be with his family and kids, and has to hear David's nightlife stories after games and away trips, etc. Wright is in the spotlight, he's single, and he's having the time of his life. Reyes really can't enjoy the NYC spotlight as much as Wright (atleast he feels so).

This could possibly explain why he degraded so much as a player throughout the course of the season. As mentioned in dozens of IGT's, he just looked like he wasn't having fun anymore - whereas in the past he had an infectious smile that could turn a deficit into a basestealing rally.

The big story of 2008 will be to see how Reyes copes with his personal issues both on and off the field.

My heart bleeds for him. It's tough having a social life when you're only pulling down seven figures in the biggest city in the world.

McGimpy sometimes lets out a cry or hissing sound.

During the rare times the McGimpy goes down to the ground (such as to change trees for food), it moves very slowly.

If this is true (I said IF Hand-clappers) then maybe I would trade Reyes for Santana.

as he was going down the tubes, I wondered a few times if there was some personal problem he was dealing with.

and while this would be unsurprising if true, there needs to be more than "friend of a friend of a guy" to convince me it is.

My guess is that Reyes' downfall is due in part to a lack of focus because he's out to all hours of the night doing god knows what.

I don't know if I really buy that one. I could see Reyes thinking "man I wish I had his life" with regards to Wright, but I find it hard to believe he'd be THAT upset and jealous to the point it would affect his performance on the field. Besides, its not like its something new. Reyes had his kids and Wright probably had his stories in the first half of the year too

LOL... this is too funny. Reyes slumped in the second half because he didn't want to go home? LOL

So why did Wright slump at the end of last year? Was he pining for a bastard baby?

I doubt any of this is true at all.

There were two instances that WFAN callers called the late night show (happened during the summer), and mentioned that Reyes was a "dope fiend", the calls were immediately hung up on.

This certainly grain of salt/take it for what it is worth. BS? Very likely, but who knows?

I wonder too if there was more than just a slump, or obsession with stolen bases (which I do not buy)....

When Willie Scolded him, he was clearly upset. And I don't recall him being the same. Of course, I'm curious as to when it was discovered Wright made another $20+m with Vitamin Water (the amount Reyes basically gets paid for 4 years, give or take)

I think those factors, plus life stress might have had a part in it. His eyes/body language showed that he was not the same. He's 23 going into last year, he's still very young. We shouldn't doubt any of this. I don't think it's drugs, I just think it's a new phase in his life that he needs to adjust to and it is NOT easy. And I was worried what 2 completely different deals would do for Reyes' psyche. He's the on field leader of that defense and sparkplug, but he's only half of what Wright is in terms of money/attention. Maybe it is hard to accept for him.

Who is to say that it's unlikely he feels that way? Or that it is wrong to feel that way for a while?

So, he does not want to be home.

But he is so into his kids that he is rushing home.

It all makes sense.

Could never possibly be that he just had a shitty half, maybe had some sulky after effects from Willies insistence that he not become a loafer.
