| Sounds like he's afraid he'll be the last non Latino standing Billy Wagner no fan of Mets' stagnant offseason, rips team's lack of plan Billy Wagner isn't a fan of GM Omar Minaya's offseason. And he used the Mets' own Web site to offer his critique. "Someone asked me what I thought of our team," Wagner told MLB.com. "I said, 'What team?' We've lost 13 games (Glavine's 2007 win total), and now we are going to have to give up something to get those games back. I'm afraid we're just going to create other holes if we give up a (Lastings) Milledge, a (Mike) Pelfrey or a (Aaron) Heilman. "I'm trying to be positive. I'm saying we have some good players. But I'm worried. The Braves are getting better, and the Phillies made a move (by trading for closer Brad Lidge). We've brought back some people, and that's good. But losing Tom is big. It's a lot more than the 13games he won. It's what he did for John Maine and Oliver Perez and how professional he was. People want to focus on one bad game or just the day-to-day stats. I do that myself when I read about football. But I'm involved in this, and I know how important (Glavine) was. We don't have him and we don't even get to the last game with a chance. He was one of the few leaders we had. "The Mets didn't do anything wrong. I know he wanted to be home more. I understand that, but where does that leave us?" Wagner also lamented Paul Lo Duca's ouster. "Maybe he wasn't the best receiver. I don't know. But Paulie competed," Wagner said. "He battled every day, and we had some guys who didn't show up every day. They were satisfied if they got a hit and we lost. "Paul was (angry) if he had four hits and we lost. And every one of the pitchers trusted him. He was a big part of what we did, and now he's gone, too. ...It just worries me that we're missing some important guys." Wagner told the Mets' Web site it would be foolish to include Heilman in a trade. "It would be a big chance to take," he said. "... No way you can trade him." And as for any consideration of putting Orlando Hernandez in the bullpen, he added: "(El Duque) pitches great for five games and then can't pitch for two weeks. If we put him in the bullpen, we're going to ask him to pitch three times a week. Can he take that?" Wagner's bluntness has landed him in trouble before. As the Mets were collapsing the final day of the season, the closer apologized to Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson that morning after he ripped them in New York magazine.

| It's apparent that the people running the teams priorities aren't necessarily winning games. Wagner wants to win and on that I agree with him. I guess in a way you could call what Wagner said, "An Inconvenient Truth, Part 2" Last edited by Ajax : 11-28-2007 at 01:17 PM. |

| I agree with him that the guys in the pen need more defined roles Wagner, speaking about the bullpen… “In Willie Randolph’s bullpen, it’s different. He wants guys to be able to go 2.2 innings or one-third of an inning or in between. That’s how he wants it. But guys just want to know, so they can prepare themselves and be comfortable… “The idea is to get them into situations where they can be successful. I mean, you wouldn’t ask Carlos Delgado to bunt.”

| I gave him the benefit of the doubt when he decided to be the dopey Pen Pal for the Post in last years NLCS. I gave him the benefit of the doubt on his stupid article surfacing on the final day of the season. Shut the hell up and pitch, you came here as a hired gun, not a consultant to the front office. Not like you came here on some grand discount to join something you considered precious and special. What an ass. |

And it stinks to high heaven further than he is covering his own a$$ for not being able to get SIX freaking outs once in the span of a four year contract. Be prepared every night, for any situation. Your job is to get outs, not to get them in a pre-designed comfortable fashion. This is totally absurd. | |

| Senior Member | The whole roles thing is bullshit....What the hell were the roles going int 2006? Heilman was supposed to be the setup guy, but Sanchez got the innings early on. Bradford and Feliciano were only supposed to be lefty/righty specialists...but they ended up working more as setupmen once Sanchez went down. Its easy to give out roles when everyone is healthy and pitching well...can anyone point to a 2 month stretch this year when the Mets had more than 2 guys in the pen pitching well? You earn a role in the pen and most of the guys pitched their way out of said roles than into them. The lack of roles didnt lead to the bullpen collapse....lack of performance led to lack of roles |
