Default Mets looking at Dotel & Chacon

METS AIMING FOR SOME HELP ON THE MOUND

Sounds good to me, I think these are two solid moves for the pen.

November 27, 2007 -- The Mets won't make a trade with the Twins simply to rent ace left-hander Johan Santana. For the Mets to trade for Santana, they would require a window to discuss a new contract, a person with knowledge of the club's thinking said yesterday.

Santana has one year left on his deal at $13.25 million, so a negotiating window (typically 72 hours) would be needed for the Mets to try to come up with a new pact. If the Mets are to trade for Santana, though, they will not be including any of their three core offensive players in the deal: Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran would all be off limits. Beltran actually has a no-trade clause anyway, as does Santana.

The Twins offered Santana a four-year extension - beginning in 2009 - for a total of $80 million, which he rejected. It was an obvious rejection because Santana certainly will clear more than that on either the free-agent front or via another team that acquires him in a trade.

Santana, who will turn 29 in March, is perhaps the major league's best pitcher, having won two Cy Youngs and adding a Gold Glove this past season. The lefty went 15-13 with a 3.33 ERA and 235 strikeouts, and in his last five years, has gone an incredible 82-35.

The Mets also are showing interest in two free-agent pitchers, Octavio Dotel and Shawn Chacon.

"Both these guys have interest in them," agent Dan Horwits said, "and they have interest in both these guys."

Dotel went 2-1 with a 4.11 ERA this past season with the Royals and Braves. He pitched in 33 games, but he struck out an impressive 41 in 302/3 innings. Horwits insisted the righty is fully healthy.

Dotel also has closing experience, but Horwits said the 34-year-old doesn't care about his role. If the Mets got Dotel, it would amplify their bullpen and provide further closing insurance for Billy Wagner, who was unavailable for a couple of games in September due to back spasms.

Chacon, who turns 30 next month, went 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA for the Pirates this past season and can both relieve and start (he started four games in 2007 and appeared as a reliever in his other 60). The righty started 20 games in 2006 and 24 in 2005, 12 during a good stint with the Yankees. It's unclear if the Mets are interested in Chacon as a starter, reliever or both.

Chacon is crap. He failed miserably the last time he was in New York. Maybe he can be a long man, but that is about it.

And Percival (who has closed games for a WS championship and playoff teams) can't do the same because....

Omar really is shopping (if this article is true) at the thrift store. This is going to be a long winter.

It looks like the mets are going to go cheap for next year.

The Yanks committed 500 million dollars to 4 players, while the mets cruise the garbage cans for food.

Dotel is worth a look.... Chacon....he's a long man, and worse he's one of those "every other year" guys. I mean if he's next to nothing cost wise, fine, but if not why not just go with the whole thought of ST invites that worked so well with Oliver, Sosa, ect for that role. No point in spending any significant money there IMO.

Will Dotel be considered another one of St. Rick's projects? Or will he just be another pitcher the Mets have to replace when he goes on the DL?

Little of A, little of B.

Dotel is not THE answer to help take the load off of Heilman. I'd view him in the same way the Mets should look at Sanchez. Maybe they'd even go so far as to say, hopefully between Sanchez, Dotel, Padilla, and whoever else from the walking wounded you fill the RH side of the 6th/7th inning next to Feliciano from the left. If they end up being more than that, great its a bonus.

Mets BP needs arms..no problem targeting these guys if they come cheap..and Dotel DID pitch welll end of last year..Chacon...I'm sure many felt the same when mets signed D. Oliver..and his numbers were alot worse than chacon's...last year we had SELE in that role..can chacon be worse?

I just would like to hear what BIG NAME is being targeted...or is it bargain basement shopping this year?

The Yankees committed that money to keep their own guys. The Mets are very much interested in a certain SP that cost them talent plus$25 mil per in salary.

Which FAs would you have Omar throw $500 mil at?

Perhaps adding Dotel would make Omar deal Heilman more readily for a top of rotation type of pitcher...

Percival was a closer of numerous winning clubs, including a WS winner.

Call me when Dotel has done that (and I like Dotel, I just think he isn't the answer, especially after the Braves had to shut him down with elbow problems IIANM).... And what makes Dotel special? Besides that he is Dominican, and that he pitched for the Mets at one time?

At this point, I don't care anymore. It is healthier to not care. I pretty much expected nothing this off season, and so far, unfortunately, this is holding up well....
