Default Schilling?

Personally I cannot stand the guy, but can he help us out in 2008 or is he over the hill?

What he definately is is a free agent.

Discuss.

Why invest big money in one year for an ancient pitcher? Hell, they'd be better off sitting on that cash and using it for Santana.

If it's only for one year, why do they need to sit on it? Why can't they use it on Schilling for one year this year and then go after Santana with it next year?

Or just use the Glavine money on Schilling this year with an option for a second in case he is still good, use the Delgado money on Santana the year after, and extend Pedro on more year (I think he will be amazing next season). Giving the Mets a 2009 rotation of Santana, Pedro, Schilling, Maine, Perez....... wait, this is in the wrong thread.

The Mets would be getting Schilling 6 1/2 years too late (had they gotten him in July of 2000, they woulda won the series with a big three of Schilling, Hampton, Leiter)

IF the intent is to replace Glavine with another veteran starting pitcher, Schilling would be a pretty good choice.

Yeah, he's got a big mouth, but he is a WINNER.

I'd have no problem with it if 1) his signing didn't lead the Mets to say "mission accomplished" and give up on what they need to do, which is trade for a young, healthy, top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher, and 2) he and pedro weren't going to be like two cats who don't like each other thrown into a room together.

Schilling said it did not bother him that Rodriguez's announcement came during Boston's coronation. But he seemed to relish the opportunity to take a shot at the Red Sox rivals' disappointing season.

"It wasn't unexpected," Schilling said. "Between them and the Yankees making sure we were updated every 15 minutes about when they were actually going to name their manager, I didn't give a crap. Bottom line was they're playing golf and making organizational decisions and we're still playing games."
Great stuff. The only team he refuses to play for are the Yankees. Awesome.

He's got the same big mouth that everyone is slamming LoDuca for.

I've seen most Sox games all season. If you're going to add Schilling, then make sure the bullpen is deep and good. He owes a good number of his wins to Timlin, Okajima and Papelbon to say nothing of Varitek's catching. And his durability is in question. That said, he'll struggle during the season but unlike Arod, he dials it up in the post season. If you're talking #4 starter for no more than a year (no option on the table), then it might be worth a shot. If nothing else, he'd make sure no one "gets bored". That alone might be worth the price of admission.

Agreed. Nothing more.

My point was if the Mets insist on replacing Glavine with another "proven vet" (and c'mon now, chances are, they WILL), then let it be Schilling. I really don't want Livan Hernandez or Bartolo Colon literally rolling up into Shea.... nor do I want the hispanic Trachsel (Silva)...
