Default Anyone know much about this guy?

From MetsBlog.com:

In a column for Minnesota’s Free Press, Twins reporter Edward Thoma does his best Nostradamus impersonation, predicting how the Twins will act during this coming off-season.

Among other predictions, Thoma writes…

“The Twins will trade a young pitcher - most likely Boof Bonser or Kevin Slowey - for a center fielder. Slowey should be the more valuable trading chip. Most likely trading partners: Mets, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Arizona.”

…mets…for whom, Lastings Milledge or Carlos Gomez…i mean, would they even want gomez right now…odd…

Slowey entered last season ranked third among Minnesota’s strong pitching prospects by Baseball America.

According to BA’s report…

“If he learns to use his secondary pitches effectively, his command could make him a frontline starter.”

In 11 starts for the Twins this season, the 23–year-old Slowey was 4–1 with a 4.60 ERA during his first-ever stint in the major leagues.
If he's the real deal, Gomez or Milledge even up sounds good to me. But who knows hoe real he is?

Mule?

Here's the Mets' problem (as I see it):

1) They need Milledge next year, and
2) who is going to trade ANYTHING for Carlos Gomez? As the centerpiece of a deal he might net an extra value meal at McDonald's. If the Mets want anything more, Gomez is "The Other Guy" in any deal.

With Martinez a year or so away, if he's for real we'd have to deal Milledge or Gomez away sooner or later. I'd rather deal Gomez and keep Milledge, but if one goes we've got the other plus Alou and Endy for the corners, and can even give Green a year as part-timer.

But the question is, how good is Slowey? That's what would determine who (if anyone) we should trade for him.

Everyone who will have anything worthwhile on the trade market is going to demand the exact opposite.

If Milledge goes and your corner OFers are Alou, Endy, Green and Gomez... you come close to having the worst corner OF production in the league. Certainly in the division.

Sickels did a smackdown with Slowey not too long ago:

10-5, 1.89 in AAA this year is pretty impressive. Most people seem to think his stuff will catch up to him though...

Thanks for the info. He sounds good enough for Omar to at least show interest.

By the way, mid-April 2008 called, and Silva's getting lit up by the Phillies already.

You do can a lot worse than Brad Radke, but I still wouldn't want to give up Milledge for that.

With Alou assured a DL trip and Beltrans inevitable dip in % the Mets need to keep outfield depth. Immaturity and arrogance aside I still think Milledge can contribute well for the Mets, and for his minimum salary I'd rather keep him than take yet another flier on a pitching "possibility".

Gomez is hitting a whole .192 in Winter Ball, with 9 KKKKK's in 26 AB's. I'm not sure he has a whole lot of value right now. He needed a full year in AA + to develop before the hand injury...

Slowey also projects as a durable inning-eater type,

I'm sure Dr. Rick would get all wet reading that.

NO THANKS. I saw that, and read no further. I cringe.

He does have some pretty good stuff. I'd be interested, but I wouldn't give up Milledge. We need him for OF depth right now...

The Twins have already offered Silva three years, $24 million. That's low-ball at today's rate, but not for a small market team supposedly dripping in pitching prospects. Call me crazy with the conspiracy theories, but Santana has already spoken up about Silva like he did when Castillo was traded. It could be that this offer is geared more towards him than Silva himself...
