Default Brian Bannister Trade...From Bad to Worse

Accordng to metsblog..this Burgos trade is looking more like a complete bust as Burgos, according to Omar himself" is supposedly going to miss ALL OF NEXT SEASON. We totally got suckered on these damaged goods by KC.

Is this a good time to note that it's the one year anniversary of Game 7?

Probably better off for the club that he is hurt and won't be blowing games for us next year.

Well, close. He said:

Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters today that RHP Ambiorix Burgos will likely miss most of next season, though it’s possible he could pitch towards the end the season.
But, in any case, this is hardly news, since he had TJ Surgery in August, and the usual recovery time from TJ is a year. As for whether we got "suckered", that would depend on when he got hurt. I don't remember hearing of any loss of velocity in ST or the early part of the season, so I thought he injured the arm while pitching at NO.

This could be a blessing in disguise, though. If his struggles were due to the injury, rather than lack of ability, we may end up with a quality RP after all. He's only 23, and it's much too early to close the book.

One thing about TJ surgery, is that often these young kids bounce back and usually throw as hard if not even harder. I hope this is the case with Burgos. I also agree, that at 23 it is early to truly call this trade a bust BUT any arm injury like this is worrisome.

Oh Please... I can't wait til Bannister has an 08 ERA of 5 something... then we can finally stop hearing about him like if he was something special.

It's not that Bannister was special. It's that he would have been a cheap solution to be our #5 to avoid guaranteed losses like Dave Wiliams. See, it doesn't matter what happens after '07 unless Burgos becomes special. Because if he doesn't do **** for us, the Royals got a solid year for a guy that is a bust and is a Benitez clone, only on the dl for a year+

So, yes, the deal is a major bust, regardless of how special Bannister would be in the next few years. Just like pissing away Lindstrom/Owens for gems like Mota to be re-signed or to take back more gems like Jason Vargas or whatever other shmendrick we got for him.

Trades for the SAKE of trades is not what we need. What we need is to audition guys like that and Humber/Pelf to see who can be a #5 starter and a 7th inning pitcher. Forget bums like Schow and Mota. It's not rocket science, know what I'm typin'?

In hindsight, Bannister might have been good enough (the only person saying special here is Hojo) to hold down the 5th spot, a spot that was crap the whole season. It would have given Pelfrey another season in the minors, and maybe even spared us of the greatness that were Williams, Joey Lawrence, et al...

Again... hindsight...

He could have had the surgery in May/June. The wonderful Mets medical staff (yup, them.. again) had Burgos sit out practically FOUR months... THEN decided that he needed surgery after trying to come back.

Absolutely ridiculous, and a terrible judgment call by the doctor(s).

I dunno... that game hurts more the more you realize it's as close as this group will probably ever get.

Oh, somewhere in this favored Shea, the curveball was spinning right,
Wally is writing something, and somewhere chop shop doors are shut tight,
And somewhere Cardinals are laughing, and MOFO children shout;
But there is no joy in Metsville — Mighty Moley has struck out.

Burgos put up like a 3.42 ERA with a 1.1 WHIP in 23 2/3 IP this year. He's still young and I can't say I wouldn't do this trade over. Burgos is younger and has a lot more upside than Bannister. I doubt in anyone's wildest dreams anyone expected Bannister to have the kind of year he did have (even probably Dayton Moore). We'll see if it was a fluke or not, but Bannister never impressed me with his nibbling and his so-so stuff.
