Default Mets AFL contingent announced

From "Toby's Mets Minor League Report":

Quote:
The Mets
announced
that they will send C Mike Nickeas, 1B Mike Carp, OF Caleb Stewart, RHP
Carlos
Muniz, RHP Eddie Kunz, LHP Adam Bostick and LHP Eddie Camacho to play
in the
Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions.

*Mike Nickeas
C* born:
2/13/83
B/T: R/R 6'0" 220 lbs

In 65 games
for Binghamton,
Nickeas hit .217/.281/.278 with ten doubles.
Sent down to St. Lucie for July, he didn't find the Florida
State League
much kinder putting up a .208/.378/.299 line on the strength of 17
walks in 26
games. The Mets acquired the
Canadian-born catcher from the Texas Rangers in exchanged for Victor
Diaz on
August 30, 2006.

*Mike Carp 1B*
born: 6/30/86
B/T: L/R 6'2" 215 lbs

After
impressive showings in St. Lucie and HWB last year, Carp, fighting a
hand
problem, posted a .251/.337/.387 season in Binghamton.
Blessed with a solid plate eye, Carp walked 39 times and was hit
10 more
times. Carp, who played in 97 games
managed just 27 extra base hits (16 2B and 11 HR) a disappointing total
for
someone who had 45 XBH in the FSL the year before as his isolated
slugging
declined from .163 to .136. _Baseball
America_ ranked Carp as the #8
prospect in the Mets system entering this season.
The Mets
drafted Carp in the ninth round of 2004 out of Lakewood (CA) HS.

*Caleb Stewart LF, RF
*born: 6/11/82
B/T: R/R 6'3" 235

The corner
outfielder's scorching May (.364/.407/.589 with 6 doubles and 6 HR)
earned him
the Eastern League's Player of the Month.
However, a post-All-Star line of .199/.279/.291 doomed him to a
final
tally of .252/.314/.400. The Mets drafted
Stewart in the 22nd round in 2004 out of the University of Kentucky.

*Carlos Muniz RHP* born: 3/12/81
B/T: R/R 6'1" 190

Without
much fanfare, Muniz just keeps on getting guys out as a reliever in the
Mets
system. This year he was 2-4 with 23
saves in 28 chances and a 2.45 ERA for Binghamton. In
58.2 IP, he gave up just 43 hits, two
homers and fanned 62 while walking 17. As
I've mentioned before, I have a tough time squaring his low HR rate
with his
low gb/fb ratio of 0.51. His fastball is
supposed to be 90-92, and works off a slider and changeup as well. Muniz didn't allow a run in 5.2 innings in the
regular season in New Orleans.
The Mets
drafted Muniz in the 13th round in 2003 out of Long Beach State. In
a fun draft oddity, Muniz was the only
Dirtbag selected that year, but LBSU had at least one a first rounder
in each
of the following three drafts, Jared Weaver (2004), Troy Tulowitski
(2005),
Cesar Ramos (2005) and Evan Longoria (2006).

*Eddie Kunz RHP*
born: 4/8/86
B/T: R/R
6'5"
250

The big
hard-throwing righty was 0-1 with five saves in five chances for Brooklyn with a 6.75 ERA.
In 12 innings, he struck out nine and walked eight.
The closer on Oregon
State's
CWS championship team this year after serving as a set-up man last
year, Kunz
works off a plus (93-95 mph) fastball with good "life" says a scout I
talked to
this summer. The scout reported that his
breaking ball remains a question mark. _Baseball America_ called his slider "flat"
in their draft analysis.
The Mets
drafted Kunz with their first pick this year, in the supplemental first
round, 42nd
overall.

*Adam Bostick LHP*
born: 3/17/83
B/T: L/L
6'1"
235

I find few
players in the Mets system as tough to analyze objectively as Bostick
(6-7,
5.66 ERA, 97 IP, 106 H, 20 HR, 45 BB, 91 K in New Orleans). Here are the basics:
he's
a deceptive lefty with a good curveball who struggles to locate. I saw him at his low-point right before he
hit the disabled list with shoulder fatigue in June. Then, he was
simply
dominant for two starts at the end of July, with New Orleans people I talked to very
impressed, praising the life on his fastball.
Unable to sustain that brief flash of excellence he was 1-2 with
a 6.30
ERA in 6 starts in August, walking 19 in 30 innings. When last I saw
him
on August 26, he really struggled to throw strikes for the first 2+
innings
missing the strike zone on 11 of his first 13 offerings, a pattern he
repeated
in his playoff start. _Baseball
America_ ranked him as the Mets
13th best prospect coming into the year.
Bostick was
acquired along with Jason Vargas from the Marlins in exchange for
right-handed
relievers Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens November 20, 2006. The Marlins picked him in the sixth round of
the 2001 draft out of Greensburg-Salem (PA) HS.

*Eddie Camacho LHP*
born: 9/17/82
B/T: L/L
6'1"
195

Camacho did
solid work out of the New
Orleans
bullpen in 2007 going 2-1 with 2 saves and a 4.44 ERA in 32 games. In 46.2 innings, he fanned 42 while walking
14 for a healthy K/BB of three. He was
more effective against righties (.712 OPS) than against lefties (.891
OPS), a
good sign his changeup is his best pitch.
Sent down to Binghamton
for the season's final week, he didn't allow a run in 11.2 Eastern
League
innings.
The Mets
signed Camacho as a non-drafted free agent in 2004. Coming
into this season, _Baseball America_ had him ranked as
the Mets 20th best
prospect. His blurb in the prospect
handbook contains this wonderful story: "When the Mets were short a
pitcher on
their GCL club in 2004, they asked their area scouts for the names of
the best
pitcher they saw who went undrafted and signed Camacho on the
recommendation of
Steve Leavitt. Camacho signed for $500
and left his job at a canning plant to turn pro..."

I've been on his e-mail list for a while, and the only negative is that strange, disjointed format. He writes good reports.

Here, compliments of Adam Rubin, is the Mets Hawaii Winter League group:

Quote:
Drawing the always-tough Hawaiian Winter League assignment, which last year included two days off a week and an apartment on the beach, are catcher Sean McCraw, infielders Nick Evans, Hector Pellot, Emmanuel Garcia and Daniel Murphy, and pitchers Jose De La Torre and Brant Rustich.

Don't get me involved in this. There aren't too many things I know for sure, but here is one of them: The last place I want to be is enmeshed in this little Yoda/homo/RuPaul/Revolutionary War thing you've got going with DDP right now. And yes, I said "enmeshed."

Okay, fine. As you were. But I have to warn you, I've got to go with DDP on this, if only because we are both filthy Americans. And, truth be told, we did win both wars, create Yoda, and in terms of gayness, I mean, Elton John? Wham? Hugh Grant? Even your straight guys are gayer than our gay guys. Well, you may have had a point about Richard Simmons. Although in fairness, he acted like that way back in the early 80s before gays were even invented.

Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake. Thundering examples of American masculinity all, I'm sure.

And are you taking credit for Simmons creating excessively camp gayness? That's not quite the angle I'd have taken to win the argument....
