I hope Backman gets another chance. I don't think the mets will do anything for him, but that says more about the mets thanit does about Backman. I just hope some organization hires him as a manager somewhere in thier system.

Backman will eventually get another chance. Degenerate ballplayers always manage to find work, why should it be different for managers?

Don't get me wrong, I like Backman, but there's plenty of other guys i'd hire into the Mets organization before him.

Excuse my naivety, but what does his bankruptcy filing have to do with his eligibility for a managerial position? DWI and domestic abuse are understandbale, but the bankruptcy report seems like piling on.

Believe it or not, but bankruptcy has a huge stigma attached.

I know I'm good at what I do. And I know I'm better than 95 percent of the people out there in the organizations.
It looks like an excess of modesty isn't his problem. Self-confidence is an asset, but if I were a GM and he said something like this (or just projected it non-verbally) in the interview, it wouldn't make me more likely to hire him.

What do the Mets owe Backman? They knew about his problems but didn't blow the whistle. If anything they covered for him. It's great that he was part of the '86 team and all, but this situation is entirely of his own making. This might sound blasphemous to some, but the guy had one less HR in his Met career than Ordonez did, with almost 100 less RBI...

The unanswered question every time people try to make the Mets the "bad guys" with this situation. Thank you Blackman for your play, but this is a business. We COVERED for you instead of making Willie look like a saint. There's nothing else we need to do for you.

The mets really don't OWE Backman anything. It's just that other organizations do a better job of taking care of their former players. I know Backman was not a superstar like Gooden or Strawberry or Carter, Seaver or Keith, but he was a good player. I don't feel the mets ever got over the way they treated Ray Knight and in 20 years + they still look like a low class operation in many ways. Sorry, we don't agree.

How did they treat Knight? He was terrible and always injured in '84 and '85, and most of Baseball thought the Mets were crazy for sticking with him so long, especially with HoJo around. They offered him the most money after the '86 series, but he wanted more and it cost him. Cashen didn't build winners everywhere he went by overpaying for declining players just because they had sentimental value, especially when cheaper and younger options were readily available. Knight won the WS MVP, but it took HoJo about half a season to double his production...

Knight will forever be a part of Met history, but if this is his beef with the Mets he needs to grow up. The only time I've seen his name in the papers the last few years was when he beat up some other parent at his daughter's Softball game. That kind of thing is cute when you're knocking out Eric Davis, but the guy has clearly had tons of anger issues that have followed him throughout his career...
