Default Historical Collapse?

Obviously this doesn't compare with the Miracle at Coogan's Bluff or Gene Mauch's classic 2 man pitching rotation down the stretch for the 1964 Phillies.......

BUT - if the Mets go from having the best NL record by 3 games with 20ish to go to not even make the playoffs, where does this rank in history? Top 10? Not even top 25?

ALSO - who gets fired if they miss the playoffs? Willie for being a stoic ass who doesn't get NL baseball after 3 years of managing it (squeeze plays and double switches) or Omar for not trading a 4th OF with minor league depth for Chad Cordero?

Do you honestly think that the Wilpons will stand for such an epic collapse?

I don't know that I would call it epic, and both the manager and general manager will face a lot of questions but firing either would be very Stienbrenneresque circa the 70's and 80's.

And the Wilpons are likely to become more and more Steinbrenneresque as they try to grow the cable network and market the new stadium.

I'd expect that they'll accept a LOT less losing than they have previously.

Frank, I sure HOPE the Wilpons dont sit there and take this nonsense, but I fear they will do little about it. One of the reasons why I feel this way, is Fred has his dream stadium, Citi Ebbets Field coming in 2009, which is way too small for NYC, and they dont have to worry about it being sold out, until at least 2011 or beyond.

If the Mets do not make the playoffs, and I were the owner of the Mets, there is ZERO doubt that Willie would be gone, and I would probably tell Omar that if the team has a repeat of 2007 next season, that he would be on thin ice as well.

IMHO, Willie is not competent as a Major League Manager, and Omar crapped the bed with the bullpen. Even with Omar's massive misjudgement, I still blame Willie more than Omar, as there have been MANY games this season, that Willie completely mismanaged, and cost us the loss. I remember saying too many times back then, how I hope Willie's lack of any common sense and managerial sense, doesnt cost us the season. Now, my worst fears may be coming to reality.

I am still hopeful we will come out of this mess, and get to the playoffs, but even if we do, we wont last long if this is to be the level of play the Mets plan to bring to the playoffs. They need to find their A game, and right now, its a D game at best.

The next team with a seven game lead with 17 to play who doesn't win their division/league will be the first. I would say it would qualify as epic.

accepting losing is one thing, looking at a situation and examining why it has buckled and making a level headed decision about it is entirely another, there is a good reason the Dodgers appeared in the playoffs one more time than the Yankees between 1976 and 1988 and won as many world series, and there is a reason they have gone no where since, and shortly thereafter the Yankees have found themselves in the playoffs every year for over a decade.

that coupled with the fact that the 2 worst teams in the league is all that's left on the schedule makes it about as epic as you can get.

The Mets need to go 7-6 if the Phillies go 8-4 for the Mets to take the division. Is this possible?

If Juan Samuel Jr gets his head out of his ass they could run the table. I hope he doesnt get into another mano a mano with Hanley Ramirez though or it could be more of the same

This much is certain from tonight on the Mets have no off days

Maine (nats), Pelfrey (nats), Glavine (fish), Pedro (fish), Perez (fish), Maine (fish), Pelfrey (nats), Glavine (nats), Pedro (nats), Perez (Cards), Maine (fish), Glavine (fish), Pedro (fish)

thus far in his short career Maine has showed a good ability to focus and perform at a high level when the heat is on, I have grave concerns about throwing Pelfrey on Wednesday night if in the event the Mets lose tonight as they will be nursing a 1.5 game lead, I suspect the only game the Cards will win the rest of the year is next Thursdays bizzaro make up date.

As much of a debacle as the pitching has been, there is no excuse for the Mets to only score 4 runs against the AAA Nats pitching.

Totally agreed, but the problem is... they rolled over and played dead the moment they were behind. We have seen that FAR too many times this season. Killer instinct you ask ? The Mets dont have ANY of it.

There are not many directions to roll when the deficit goes from 5-4, to 7-4, to 9-4 to 12-4.

I mean at one point LoDuca was up, hits a freaking laser beam and Alous is doubled up. I think at that point it was only 5-4, maybe 7-4. I am fairly certain by the time Joe Smith sent that fed ex package into right field the page had to be turned.
