Couple this with Cy Hamels back on the mound for the Phils tonight and a 1.5 game lead is all but guaranteed.

I still can't believe that with 14 games left and the team in freefall, the first three pitchers they trotted out last night (in arguably the biggest regular season game since clinching the 99 wild card) were lawrence, sele and schoeneweis.

granted, every regular season game over at least the next few days will be the biggest since 1999.

I Maine fertilizes the mound tonight, the Mets are completely toast.

Much like last year's playoffs...we need Maine to drag out his XXL-sized sack to the mound.

Graphic and somewhat humorous...but true.

I hate to bust your one man Phils parade but I see Maine stepping up big tonight. Maine has dominated the Gnats this year and has come up huge in big spots in his young career(Game 6, and tossing a gem vs the Braves after getting swept by the Phils) I believe Maine is also 5-1(6-1 if not for the pens implosion vs the Braves last week) this year when pitching after a Met loss.

What the Mets needed more than anything else was a decent pitched game, 2007 standards meaning 6 innings 2 runs or less. I think if there was anyone other than Lawrence on the mound last night the bleeding is stopped and we're having a different conversation today.

Unless that anyone is Humber. He obviously cant tango with the likes of the great B-LAW.

The only problem with your scenario, is after 6 great innings by a starter, we then go to the bullpen.... which by Willie's standards probably means Mota. We all know how that strategy has been working out.

It's not the starters I am worried about. Its the bullpen (and the massive brain farts by the entire team of late) that is killing us. Lawrence shouldnt have started last night, and everyone in the Universe knew it other than Willie.

Lawrence aside, it hasnt really been starting pitching thats been the problem.....

The offense needs to go on one of those stretches where they carry the team with a 10+ straight 5+ run games....and someone, anyone, in the bullpen needs to grow a pair.
