Default Didn't really notice this before...

Milledge is CHRUSHING LH pitching to the tune of .379/.400/.655 in 30 AB's.

Is it too early to get intrigued over what he can do in a full season?

If you look so is Easley and Alou. The 3 of them combined are hitting around .350 vs. lefties this year. Until Beltran gets back at least that should be the OF anytime a lefty is on the mound.

So why does Willie insist on batting Milledge near or at the bottom of the lineup ?

Would you rather two automatic outs at the bottom of the lineup?

Milledge gets on, you have the pitcher sacrifice him over, and then the top of the lineup can get him in.

Why is this a problem?

EDIT: Nevermind the fact that he's hit best in the #8 spot.

I was amazed what he did last night. I still would love to know what havoc Reyes and Milledge could cause at the beginning of the lineup.

#2 is the last place I want Milledge. He's an aggressive hitter, and a successful one. #2 calls for a patient hitter who rarely Ks and can take pitches (so Reyes can steal), bunt Reyes over, or hit to the right side to advance him.

I want Milledge doing what he's been doing best---swinging away.

Milledge hit a lot of leadoff and 2nd in the minors, in fact thats where he spent most of his time.....contrary to opinion, he is a patient hitter as evidence by his .385 career OB%..... He has also shown no problems hitting behind in the count at any level.

Now the argument can be made that he's having success where he is right now and its best to just leave him alone, as well as that Castillo's best spot is #2....but for the future, he has shown every thing you'd like to see from a #2 hitter.

For the future, I see him as a solid #3 more than #2.

As for the bottom of the order, it seems to help a lot of young players. Gotay, Gomez, Milledge, Wright (#7 for him early on), and Yankees rookies like Sorryano, Cabrera, and (not sure on this one) Cano. Maybe even Reyes (not sure on that one, either).

Reyes was pretty much a leadoff hitter from day 1. As long as Beltran and Wright are here, Milledge isnt hitting #3 any time soon.

No, not soon. But #5 behind Delgado next year would be nice.

I think Milledge would be the ideal #2 hitter if he continues developing like he has. He's a line-drive hitter that should hit a ton of doubles, he loves going the other way, and he's shown the ability to take walks. He's not a huge basestealing threat, but he certainly has above average speed.

He's not hitting fifth that soon I think at this stage he's an ideal #6 hitter think of how many more runs the Mets would have scored this year if they had him in the 6th spot over Lo Duca or Green.

You're right about next year. Only if Beltran moves to #2 would #5 be open. With Alou and Green most likely gone after this season, it'd have to be Wright or Beltran at #5. If trades or FA signings come into play, things would change, but with the current roster I'd go with:

Reyes
Castillo
Beltran (or Wright)
Delgado
Wright (or Beltran)
Milledge
Catcher
Gomez

As for the "wouldabeens", that's all speculation. We have no real way of knowing how Milledge might've responded to the pressure of being Wright's "protection". I'm inclined to agree with you, but it's just a guess.
