Default Biggio to retire..

Craig Biggio-2B-Astros Jul. 24 - 1:53 pm et

Craig Biggio announced Tuesday that he'll retire at the end of the season.

Biggio was clearly miscast as an everyday leadoff hitter during the first half of the season, but he still hits lefties, batting .297/.373/.532 against them last year and .318/.351/.489 in 2007, suggesting that he'd be useful as a part-time player if he wanted to continue his career. Still, most Hall of Fame-type players don't want to go out that way. And Biggio should be a Hall of Famer. He's 24th all-time in hits, sixth in doubles, 14th in runs scored and 31st in total bases. He's also has 400 steals and four Gold Gloves to his credit. Plus, he's three HBPs away from breaking Hughie Jennings' major league record. He's been one of the true greats at second base.

Ah, one of my favorite all-time non-Mets. What a player. The real shame of his career is that he wasn't an athlete.

He's had a good run. Hasn't every player who got to 3000 hits made the HOF?

So rare these days that a guy stays with one team for his entire career, as WELL as putting up solid, professional numbers.

The game will miss the guy.

Seems like a good guy and a classy ball player. Surely a HOFer based on 3000 hits. That said, I don't forsee a day where I will be telling my kids I had the priviledge to watch Biggio play. He is a guy that kind of snuck up on the HOF. Definitely deserves to be there though, since 3000 hits is nothing to sneeze at.

That's an interesting idea. He is someone who obviously has shown houston a lot of loyalty through the years and I wonder if he would go elsewhere. I doubt it but if he did, we have a hole at 2b and I am sure he could be gotten for a song.

I really don't think he'd want to wear another uniform after all those years in the .... rainbow sherbet. Whatever the eff color those things were.

If you were an Astros fan, you surely would. He was consistently a great player and even played sparkling defense in the outfield. He's what you would happily call a gamer.

Very true, I probably would.

Will they stop playing those ridiculous bee noises in Houston next year, or will they keep torturing us until Berkman is no longer an Astro?

On a somewhat related note do you guys think that Bagwell makes the HOF? He probably would be a lock if he could have played a bit longer and gotten to 500 HRs but otherwise his career numbers aren't too bad.

Biggio's shot he had a great career, but I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole these days.
