Default How things have changed!!...

Just read in "For Mets Fans ONly", that in 1974, Nolan RYan of the Angels hooked up in a pitching duel w/ Luis Tiant of the Red Sox. THe game went 15 innings and Tiant pitched 14 of them ; Ryan pitched all 15 !! He threw a total of 235 pitches that day !! ...... amazing that his arm didn't fall off.

That's about 220 more pitches than Carl Pavano has thrown under his Yankee contract.

It's like that all over. Frank and Romy used to exchange insults at the rate of 8 an hour. Now they're both on insult counts and they barely get that many fired off in an average day.

Don't even get me going on what Photoshop counts have done to the entertainment value of this place.

Ryan was good... but what really makes him great is his VORP.

FYI, Harang pitched ten innings tonight for the Reds.

I found a box of the game in question.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/bo...97406140.shtml

Angels won it when they scored with one out in the 15th off starter and loser Luis Tiant (so he gets credit for 14.1 IP) when Denny Doyle singled in Mickey Rivers for a 4-3 win.
Ryan, however, "only" went 13 with a reliever taking the final 2.
The # of pitches wasn't listed (they didn't routinely track them then) and 235 sounds a bit high to me (since your source got the innings wrong he may be off a pitch totals too) although it probably wasn't too far off - mainly because Nolan K'd 19 in the game and walked 10 !!

The 4th inning, for instance, was pure Ryan:
walk, walk, walk, K, RBI-walk, K, K
7 batters, no hits, 1 run, 3 Ks, bases left loaded, no one puts a ball in play

Lots of Met connections in Anaheim in addition to Ryan.
LeRoy Stanton (he went over in the same trade) was in the OF
Sandy Alomar Sr started at SS; he was then PH for by future coach Tommy McGraw; and the replacement SS was none other than Bobby Valentine.
Angel 3Bman was Bob Oliver, father of future Met Darren

Game Time = 4:02
There are 9 inning Yankee games that go longer.

Very rare these days, but his manager was a scout before they gave him the interim job. He's got nothing to lose really. I'm not sure I've ever heard of a scout getting an interim manager's position, or a bullpen coach like the one in Baltimore for that matter. I would like to see the Reds bring back Ray Knight, if only because somebody would at least be fighting every night....

So if "they" pitched so many innings, so many complete games and so many pitches...and their careers lasted so long, who was right....the lords o the game of the 60's and 70's or the present day "Petersons"?

Considering how much more advanced "medicine" is, the fact that they did what they did is astounding...

Tell that to Koufax, Stottlemyer, and a bunch of others whose careers were cut short, including virtually all the young SPs on Billy Martin's Oakland team.

Was watching Ryan close out the Orioles in game 3 of the 69 series last night. Good thing they traded him for Fregosi.

McGimpy sometimes lets out a cry or hissing sound.

During the rare times the McGimpy goes down to the ground (such as to change trees for food), it moves very slowly.

In defense of Billy, he had no bullpen to speak of.

That said, Norris, McCatty, Langford, et al burned out very quickly.

Norris had a little (Gooden-esque) help with his decline...

Did teams carry fewer pitchers on the roster back then?
