NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (July 22) - Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh died Sunday night after being struck in the head by a line drive as he stood in the first-base coach's box during a Texas League game with the Arkansas Travelers, police said.
It kind of puts the "importance" of winning and losing in perspective, doesn't it?

Condolences to his family, friends and teammates.

Very sad news. Over the years, I cannot recall anyone getting killed in a similar fashion.

My Condolonces to his Family.

Damn. That sucks.

I know it is often funny to see line coaches dancing and ducking out of the way of line drives headed their way...but yes, this does shed some sobering light on the real dangers of baseballs flying in the direction of people without mitts to protect themselves.

With that said, has anyone actually died in the stands from being hit by foul balls?

According to Foul Play: Fan Fatalities in Twentieth-Century Organized Baseball, two since 1900.

Do we really need someone to die every few months to "put winning and losing in perspective"...?

I was going to say the same thing. I am about irrational as it comes with regard to winning or losing but even I don't need a tragedy such as this to remind me it is just a game.

Right. But somehow, I still need to be assured that you do not have Mets games on in the operating theatre. I don't want to be stabbed in the spleen because Gomez gets to an 0-2 count for the second straight AB.

Yeah, I was just about to trade my kids to a crack dealer for season tickets. Luckily this guy got killed.

It's not "winning and losing" that needs to be put in perspective, but the priorities of life in general. I see plenty of grown men around here who claim they "still haven't gotten over Game 7" or other such nonsense. When you're ten years old it's understandable to cry over Beltran's ninth inning nap against Wainwright. When you're in your 60's it's just bizarre. I think I "got over" Game 7 in the middle of the AFLAC commercial 10 seconds after the Cardinals left the field.

I just can't wait for the eulogies saying this guy died "doing what he loved." This guy died coaching first base. Talk about a senseless way to die. I think I'd rather die doing something I didn't love, like running into a burning building and saving some orphans.
