Note the Mets have been 6-4 since the ASB, even with a tough west coast road trip.

Coincidence?

And if they both start hitting with authority, this won't be an NL east race for long.

Though that has basically been the case all year. If either of them were having a 2006 type year, this team is 7-10 games up.

This team, despite all of the offensive woes and injuries it has dealt with, is STILL only 5 games off last season's pace, when EVERYTHING was going well.

Which either a) speaks a lot about the talent of the team or b) speaks a lot about how lousy the NL East is.

Being a natural pessimist in all things, I lean towards b. However, I think a lot of credit for the Mets still being in 1st goes to Maine & Perez. Where would the Mets be if those two had crapped out this year? Probably looking up to the Braves right now.

OK, let's play with the premise that the entire NL East is terrible. Does that mean the entire NL East was even worse last season? Because, even though the Mets are only 5 games behind last years pace, their lead in the East is 11 games less than last season at this time. So, given that information one could argue that the NL East, as a whole, actually got better this season. Meaning, if the current NL East is better than the 2006 NL East, wouldn't that have something to do with the Mets not having the same stranglehold over the division?

You might find the difference in the records of the NL East teams against the Mets, 2006 vs. 2007. In that case the division could still be worse, mainly because the Mets are worse.

I credit all this to my avatar, and I'm not changing it anytime soon.
