Default Omar Minaya comments on the Trade Deadline

This is from today's New York Times:

Quote:
With the July 31 trade deadline quickly approaching, Minaya said he has spoken with several general managers about possible deals. But he added that because teams seem less inclined to dump salaries in trades and have locked up several players to long-term contracts, he does not expect many trades to go through. "You have to ask yourself whether the guys you have are better than the guys we have now," Minaya said.

Good question. However, you would have to also dump Green if you add an outfielder. Not easy, IMO.

To answer Paulie's response, the only better position players I can see that may be available are Griffey and Dunn. As for pitchers, the Cubs are winning so Zambrano is out and Contreras and Vazquez are no better than what we have.

I think at this point, our best bet is to get a bat off the bench and maybe some relief pitching. But again, what do you do with guys like Mota and Shoeneweis?

I think Omar has a point.

I don't know about that. Green would make a pretty nice bench player IMO. Heck, even if they don't make a trade, having him platoon with Milledge when Alou is activated would be a nice start.

If puch comes to shove, I'd release those guys. I know it hurts because they're both signed for multiple years, but they're (Mota especially) really stinking up the joint.

I think most GM's say this kind of stuff. You don't want to tip your hand.

And what would Tampa do with a player set to make 16 mil next year? That's got to be one of the most unrealistic trades put on this board is a long time.

Is it a guaranteed if he's traded??

I think it's a team option. Remember all the stuff back in November about Omar picking up his '08 option??

My thoughts (aside from the dopiness of the trade proposal) are that this guy was one of the most highly touted prospects around the beginning of the decade, but never really clicked and is now toiling for his 6th organization.

Originally a Texas draft pick, he was dealt to Oakland in hopes that he could replace the (then) recently departed Jason Giambi. But they quickly spun him off to Detroit where he had some moderate success for a brief time, until he was released by three teams (Det, NYY, Bos) in 2006 - the last two of which are still looking for a 1st baseman.
Finally having himself a nice season, he'll turn 30 before the start of next season.

I think about guys like this whenever I hear these insta-judgements on 21 year old prospects based on 100 or so ABs.
