Default Alarming Maine quote

"I didn't feel good all game. I didn't prepare at all. I didn't use the time. It's just bad," he said.

I think it's a good quote. He's the kind of guy who'd be hard on himself if he let up two hits during a two-hitter. And... at least he didn't run out of the damn locker room like one particular "leader" on this team.

He said he didn't prepare for the game. He was being honest. What's so alarming about that?

Yup, he sucks. Trade him for Benson.

Wake me up when he does that again.

Meanwhile, it's the rest of the team's failure to prepare that's the cause for concern.

Or it would be if the team wasn't in first place with no way they'll be caught.

Honesty is admirable, but I find the fact that our ace pitcher got destroyed by the worst team in the league because he didn't prepare for them disturbing. I don't think that's unreasonable.

now, I'm getting older, and maybe my reading skills have diminished, but where did anyone say in this thread that Maine sucked?

And he's admitted that it was a poor thing to do and 'fessed up to it. That to me is a young guy who just realised the consequences of not working. So far everything said about him is that he's all business and very hard working, so I wouldn't put it in the category of "alarming" or "disturbing" just yet. I use those kind of terms when I find out Delgados bomb factory is the house next door. Now, if he'd sucked for a whole bunch of games and THEN said that this was the reason, then fair do's - poor show. Of all the players mailing it in right now, Maine is one of the few players I give a pass to for not being great or fully prepared as a one off. Heck, he could have used the "all star break time off" excuse, but instead he was as self deprecating as he normally seems to be.

It's the offense that needs to do some serious explaining.

I actually agree with you to a point - I doubt he'll go unprepared again. But I wouldn't be surprised he starts to overcompensate and ends up with the same on-field result.

Look at what that's done to the offense - guys letting hittable strikes go by in an empty show of patience, then swinging out of their shoes at garbage.

I tell everyone around me I haven't studied for the bar at all. Have I jsut played xbox? No, i've studied, jsut not to the level i think I should have. It's a common phrase. I think he didn't wrok as hard as he usually did, and now he knows better. So no, not alarming at all.

If he were to keep doing it, or have a blase attitude about it then I'd agree. He's done nothing but focus on doing his best all season, and has been the most consistent player outside of Wagner and Feliciano within their given roles - as well as being the staff ace. I'd hazard a guess that he enjoyed the AS break without realising the ramifications of not working during that period and paid the price. That he has admitted to his mistake and not skirted around how bad it was to slack off speaks volumes at this point IMO.

And that's the other thing - in what context was it? Maine seems a pretty self scrutinising guy, so his version of not preparing could be very different from totally slacking off.

bingo. but people only tend to see the glass's empty half here so much. I mean, if he said, 'it was the day off' then he owuld be bad. If he said 'my fastball wasn't working' it would be an excuse. And so on and so forth. He's been an ace, yet NO leeway for a simple quote taking RESPONSIBILITY!
