You don't need a lawyer to understand the concept of EMINENT DOMAIN.

All you need is Drinking With Bob.

Queens comedian - really Queens artist - DrinkingWithBob (a.k.a, Bob Thompson) drove around the purgatory that is "The Iron Triangle" in Willets Point, across the street from Shea, and documented the pathetic conditions of that neighborhood. Take 3 minutes and 31 seconds to enjoy the ramble:

There is renewed talk about the city taking over this land and building a baseball entertainment zone, whatever that means. This is not a new idea. The city has been trying to force small business owners out of this space for ages.

The decades-long struggle between the small business owners of this neighborhood and the city government have been documented over the years. This little clip drives the viewer right up to the source of the problem, ultimately naming names.

“And if you can’t see that, there’s something wrong with you.”
Wow! Does this guy know that many of those businesses may or may not be connected to organized crime? He does seem a lot less informed on the issues than even Wally is though.

I hate "iminent Domain" but in this case it makes sense. It's the devil's armpit and it's time for some Right Guard.

Got a question I was wondering about. In the history of The Iron Triangle/Willets Point/Chop City, whatever you want to call it, has a major auto parts chain/company or what have you ever try to get in on the action? I mean has a Nappa or even Sears ever planned to come in and maybe "class up the joint, make it seem more legit?"

While no doubt the business owners would be crying foul, citing The Wal-Mart/Barnes & Noble/Home Depot effect, but in some respect I wonder if having a Nappa or a respected auto parts chain in there would have given more crediblity to the area rather than the joke that it is.

The thing that makes it funny is that its the chop shops that add to Shea's bad name, and gives bashers plenty of annumition when knocking Shea and the Mets. I really wonder if the people (and the owners themselves) that are defending them really know how much riddicule of the Mets and Shea is given because of Chop City.

Its one thing for a stadium to be surrounded by utter nothingness like The Meadowlands, or near stripmalls or decaying neighboorhoods, but one of the things Shea is always knocked for by incoming fans and media members is the fact that right across the street there are all these places that one would expect to find all sorts of seedy characters and not exactly something you'd want right across from something considered a place for "family entertainment"

My car? Once again for those who don't know I once had a car stolen and the engine block was recovered from a guy who claimed he'd bought it from somewhere in the "iron triangle". He was about a couple of blocks away at the time. The police were pretty sure if he hadn't bought it he was going to sell it there.
